MARVIN WILLIAM FIELD
Born: Feb 19, 1940
Date of Passing: Oct 09, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARVIN WILLIAM FIELD February 19, 1940 - October 9, 2018 My husband, Marvin Field, was a happy man. He loved his life. He loved me very deeply and showed me that love every day. He cherished the memory of our son Brian who predeceased him in 2009. He loved our house and living on our gracefully treed old street. Our house, our neighbours, his circle of friendships with long time friends and colleagues, and our family were his safe place. He was an ethical, kind, charitable, socially conscious human being and he lived his life based on those principles every day of his life without exception. Although he struggled in later years with a mobility issue, he never became lost in self-pity but continued to believe he was a very lucky man and got up every morning determined to make it a good day. He believed that together the two of us were the best team of life partners he could have imagined. I wholeheartedly agree! No better person for me - no better person for him. We were together for 53 years. He leaves to mourn him, his sister Lorraine Finch, her sons, Trevor (Stacey) and David, his sister-in-law Landa Field and her sons, Keith (Wendy) and Landen (Melissa), my sister Maggie Somers (Stewart) and her children, Amanda and Lindsay plus hundreds of people whose lives he touched through the years in his capacity as a teacher, vice principal and guidance counsellor. I know this because he was frequently approached by former students who wanted him to know he was valued in their lives and because I have had such sincere condolences from colleagues who relate stories of his good humour, his helpful attitude and reliable support. In going through his papers I have also discovered letters of gratitude from students and others in the community whose lives took a positive turn because of his care and concern. Marv left us hopefully knowing that he had made our small section of the world a better place. He is predeceased by our son Brian, his brother Dennis and by his mother and father (Olga and Stan Field). Cremation has taken place. As per his wishes there will be no service. I would like to thank the doctors, nurses and health care support workers at the following hospitals: Concordia, St. Boniface and Health Sciences Centre. Their kindness and professional consideration were most appreciated by both of us. Those wishing to make a donation in his honour may wish to consider one of his favourite charities. Some of those are: Siloam Mission, the Winnipeg Humane Society, Winnipeg Pet Rescue, Koats for Kids and the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, CancerCare Manitoba, the Lung Association of Manitoba and the Leukemia Association. For the family at that very sad time I offer my condolences. Marvin, Jim Laughingdale and Peter Liba my self and many others grew up together in the Elmwood area Marvin was always so much fun and intelligent. At sixteen I went to work for the CPR at Weston shops as an apprentice my family needed my income as my father was very ill. While at the CPR I learned to fly I left the CPR and travelled west ending up in Vancouver Flying for PWA.about twelve years later. The Lord Selkirk 25 anniversary came up and Peter Liba put on a great party for us and Marvin was totally involved in organizing the whole thing and one evening the phone rang it was Marvin and we instantly reestablished our friendship of years gone by. Rest in peace my friend Sincerely Stan Fleming - Posted by: Stan Fleming (Friend) on: Mar 26, 2025

Marvin was my uncle and my friend. He was also a tireless supporter of my academic pursuits, just like his aunt Anne. (I guess optimism runs in the family.) When my father died, Marv was one of the family waiting back at the ranch to share in the good times and the not-so-good times. He was always there in my corner. I will miss jawing with him during the holidays about the history of our family and of our corner of Winnipeg. I'll always carry those stories with me, so he will go on. Best wishes to Mary and the rest of the family during this time. Take care. - Posted by: David Finch (nephew) on: Oct 22, 2018

My heart goes out to the dear ones left behind with the passing of Marvin. He and I were both born in 1940. I was born in October, so I was a about 8 months younger. We lived on Herbert Avenue in Elmwood. I remember Marvin as being a good guy to grow up with. I fondly remember him and I playing with marbles and clothespins, using them as soldiers as imaginary soldiers, as we had our little war games on Marvin's bed I recall. I also remember his father sitting in a chair and rolling up pages of the newspaper with each hand as a form of exercise. I can see from reading what his wife Mary has said about him, and I am not surprised. Marvin was a good and decent person, and it is a shame that he has passed away! - Posted by: Robert Olien (Childhood friend) on: Oct 21, 2018

I grew up next to the Field family, Dennis and Mr and Mrs Field on Carmen Avenue in Elmwood, Marvin was 20 years older than me and I lived in that home for over 20 years. Marvin was always visiting his parents. In fact it seemed that he came to see his parents on an almost daily basis. We moved there in 1964 when I was only 4 years old. Marvin was 20 years older and his brother, my friend, Dennis and Marvin had me convinced that Marvin was Superman (literally Superman from the comics). They told me that Marvin had a special watch that allowed him to do things that Superman would do. I believed that he was Superman for quite some time until, I suppose, I got old enough to realize that he wasn't. Marvin was a truly decent man who gave of himself to others. He will surely be missed and he'll always be Superman to me. - Posted by: Bruce Clark (Friend) on: Oct 20, 2018

I am so sad to read this news but so grateful to have known Mr Field and to have had his encouraging and positive influence as a major memory of my high school years. I cannot recall a time when he was not smiling. He was the only teacher to come to our 25 year reunion ( TCI class of ‘77 ) and spoke with most of us individually, recalling every name and sharing his memories of us. Sincere condolences to Mrs Field. He truly was a wonderful man - Posted by: Cathy Campbell (Former student ) on: Oct 20, 2018
