MARY LORRAINE GIBBS (INGRAM) November 29, 1926 - October 16, 2018 Lorraine Gibbs passed away after a brief illness on October 16, 2018 at age 91. She is survived by her son Jamie (Susan) of Naples, FL and Victoria Beach; daughter Judie of Rancho Mirage, CA; grandchildren, Lauren Gillette (Jason), Joanna Iliff (David), Gillian Bradford (Richard), Jamie (Alexandria), David (Monica), and 10 great-grandchildren in Dallas, TX and Atlanta, GA. She was born at her family home on Niagara Street on November 29, 1926. She started school at Queenston, then Robert H. Smith, and graduated from Riverbend School for Girls (Balmoral Hall) in 1943. Following marriage to Mel Gibbs in 1948, they settled in Silver Heights to raise their family. Lorraine was a member of the Junior League of Winnipeg, and the Winnipeg Winter Club as a past president of the ladies curling section. Lorraine and Mel joined St. Charles Country Club in 1974 and she began a happy golfing life. She was a past president of the ladies section and a past member of the Board of Governors. She was lucky enough to score a hole in one on the Gary Player course in Rancho Mirage, a feat never matched by any of the other golfers in the family. Besides golfing at St. Charles (tee times through this past September) and Rancho Mirage, she loved gardening and could be found planting and caring for many beautiful perennials, annuals and special roses in her home gardens. Lorraine was also the resident family poet, composing beautiful and often humourous poems for all special occasions. With her love of flowers and nature she particularly liked this ancient poem, about Hyacinths, the "flower of joy": If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft And from thy slender store Two loaves alone to thee are left, Sell one, and with the dole, Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul. -Anonymous A private burial has been arranged. Should friends wish, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of their choice would be appreciated. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception at St. Charles Country Club on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to my old friends, Jamie and Judie Gibbs and their families. Their family and our family lived only a few houses away from each other in Silver Heights. And I have many fond memories of their mother, Mrs. Gibbs. I remember she'd once made me the best chocolate cake EVER after Jamie gave me probably the BEST (accidental) 'bone breaking' tackle in a street football game! God bless her. - Posted by: Dana Honey (Friend) on: Oct 26, 2018

  • We will miss your Mom at our gatherings in Palm Springs. She always had a smile on her face.Love David \Cathy and the boys. - Posted by: David\Cathy Pennycook (Friend) on: Oct 20, 2018
