EDWARD FREDERICK BELL Edward Frederick Bell was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on August 5, 1924. He passed peacefully on October 22, 2018 at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, Toronto, where he has resided for over two years. His daughter Rhea was with him at the time of his passing. He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude (nee Brandes) in 2013. Together they had four children, Rhea (Barry), Rick (Linda), Wayne (Lorraine) and Donald (Terrie), eight grandchildren, Shannon (Al), Kari (Trevor), Shari (Tim), Celine, Richard (Kara), Steven (Kelly), Michelle (Joe) and Matthew, and seven great-grandchildren, Connor, Kaylee, Benjamin, Keeley, Sophia, Anna and Abigail. All will miss his smile and dry humour. Ed was a bomber pilot in the Second World War, following which he obtained a degree as a Mechanical Engineer at the University of Manitoba. After working for 14 years for Acme Screw and Gear in Toronto, he returned to Winnipeg where he worked for Versatile Manufacturing, and then Monarch Industries. After retiring in 1987, Ed and Gert travelled around the world, often to attend Rotary events. Ed was very proud of his 35 plus years of perfect attendance at Rotary and the thousands of hours he spent as a volunteer at Deer Lodge Centre after his "retirement". Throughout his life, Ed was an avid gardener and handyman (he could fix anything). He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in both the local congregation and serving for many years on the National Board. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre for their care and kindness. A memorial service will take place on November 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Thornhill Presbyterian Church, 271 Centre St., Thornhill, ON L4J 1G5. In lieu of flowers, please made a donation to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • So sorry to hear that Ed passed away. Gert and Ed were neighbors of ours on Shelley Street. My husband and Ed had a friendly competition each summer on who had the first ripe tomato. I think it was usually Ed. Great neighbors and considered to be good friends. Had lots of visits sometimes at "cocktail" hour in their sun room. Covered a wide range of topics. Ed and Gert were always so interesting to talk to. They will be dearly missed. Wes and Debbie Shawcross - Posted by: Debbie Shawcross (Former neighbor) on: Nov 23, 2018

  • Very sorry to hear of your dad’s passing Don and family. This is never easy. Please know that you are in my thoughts. - Posted by: Laurie McKenzie-tann (Old friend of Don’s) on: Oct 28, 2018
