BERNICE ERMA GREY August 15, 1922 - December 11, 2018 The light of day was fading, but the soft glow of Christmas lights warmed the room. With the sound of Pavarotti serenading her, our mom and nana quietly slipped away, to attend a fabulous Christmas reunion with her heavenly family and friends. She lived 96 vibrant and productive years and we could not have asked for anything more! Mom was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, J.P. (Buck) Grey; son Jim Grey and daughter Mary Jane Reid. She is survived by son Peter Grey (Leona Boode, Amanda and Sean), Jayme Coleman (Cam) Liam and Reid, Ryan Grey (Lauren) Colton and Taylor; daughter Susan McLeod (Bud), Chris McLeod (JoAnne) Jacob and Drew, Dustin McLeod (Selyn) Gael, Jillian Faulds (Brandon) Stella; Lauren Henderson (Kevin Burkhart) Chase and Makenna, Denny Grey (Jacalyn); daughters-in-law, Brenda Grey, Barb Chale (Rick and family), Michelle Field (John and family); nieces, nephews, the Moore family and many dear friends. Mom was born in Cranbrook, BC in 1922. As a young woman, she moved to Calgary to work in an airplane riveting factory, to help with the war effort. It was after the war that she met and married the love of her life, Buck Grey. They soon moved to Winnipeg, MB and started to raise their family of four children. Mom was an extremely devoted, affectionate and fun-loving mother and nana. She had many talents and hobbies and remained young at heart and active her whole life. She was the consummate hostess and loved to entertain. Party games were always on the agenda. Our mom was a woman of substance and contradiction; loved high fashion, fine jewellery and expensive perfume, but was just as happy in a pair of blue jeans working around the camp and playing with the grandkids and family pets. She had a true love for animals and was never without the company of a dog. She had a rare sense of humour and was rendered helpless with laughter whenever anyone had the misfortune to hurt themselves. Mom's heart has always been on Lake of the Woods, where the family spent many magical summers, both in Kenora and Sioux Narrows. She was a shrewd business woman and perhaps her crowning achievement, with the support of our dad, was the development of Robert's Lodge as the first land-based condominium in Ontario. At the age of 87, she fulfilled a dream and moved full time to Kenora, where she enjoyed several years of condo living on the lake. Failing health eventually necessitated her move to Pinecrest Home. She adjusted well to life at Pinecrest, enjoying her peers, the staff and the many activities (including the odd happy hour!) which kept her busy and involved. Our family is truly grateful to everyone at Pinecrest for helping make Mom's years there so enjoyable. A small family service was held in Winnipeg on December 20, 2018. A Celebration of Life is planned this summer in Sioux Narrows, where Mom's spirit will live on and continue to watch over us all! Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations to Mom's favourite charity, the Winnipeg Humane Society would be much appreciated. • Bernice was bright, witty, charming and a true lady of elegance. I will be ever grateful for her forward thinking when she accomplished turning Roberts Lodge into private condo units. Today, as an owner of one of the ‘Roberts Lodge’ cabins I am able to live the dream she had envisioned for the camp. Thank you Bernice, you will always remain a dear friend in my heart.
