KAREN RUTH BOYD
Born: May 06, 1966
Date of Passing: Dec 23, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKAREN RUTH BOYD Karen Ruth Boyd, aged 52, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018. She was born with heart problems that she dealt with all her life. As a baby her story was documented in medical journals, and she was considered a walking miracle. They said of her, "She has a strong desire to live" and she most certainly did! Regardless of her weak heart, she lived life to the fullest, many, many more years than the doctors ever expected. More recently she fought a courageous battle against cancer with an optimistic attitude second to none! Once again, she left her doctors in wonder as she made them and anyone around her laugh. She refused to let the cancer take her. Sadly, in spite of winning that battle, she slipped away quietly, at home in her sleep. Karen leaves behind her beloved spouse, Jim Burkitt of Winnipeg. Born to Albert (Bert) and Helen (Strachan) Boyd of Hampton, NB, on May 6, 1966, she was youngest of four children. Sister to David (Ruth) Boyd of Sussex Corner, NB, John Boyd of Hampton, NB and Lorraine (Thurland) Brown of Winchester, ON. She will be missed by her large extended family. She was predeceased by her grandparents, and her father, Bert Boyd. In her teen years Karen worked in the family business, Atlantic Press. She was a 1984 graduate of Hampton Christian School and from there went on to Winnipeg Bible College where she earned her BA in Biblical Studies (1987). Learning continued to be her passion all her life as she accumulated more degrees, including CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) while working full time jobs - improving herself, to better enable her to help others. Karen made the Winnipeg area her permanent home after college graduation, making visits back home to the Maritimes to see family whenever she could. She was a professional businesswoman with a heart of gold and a generous spirit that touched everyone she met. Whether she was running a small newspaper business she started (The Morden Key), managing a car dealership, a doctors clinic, a financial institution, or just standing on an elevator, her goal was to make sure all who came in contact with her would walk away with a smile on their face, knowing they had been well taken care of! Karen had a beautiful, contagious smile and spirit! Although she lived with a weak heart, she lived strong and adventurous; back packing in Europe, sky diving from an airplane, horseback riding, hot air ballooning, travelling the country in a singing group (she performed at Expo '86) or conquering the golf course, she lived life to the fullest. She is remembered for her musical abilities and creativity that was often used to bring life and happiness into daily life, as well as special occasions such as employee banquets at work. She so enjoyed organizing events where people were going to have fun, and she was the best at it. Karen was an amazing woman of many talents and gifts, who took a place in the hearts of all her many friends, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. The world was a much, much better place with her in it. A private family burial will take place in Hampton, NB, in the future. Dr Boyd was an excellent doctor to my grandma, mom, myself and siblings and my daughter. When she left practice I cried. She was the one who took care of me since a baby and then told me I was going to have a baby myself. My daughter unfortunately is in heaven as well since Nov 4/18 Rest in peace. You were the best - Posted by: Shelly (Patient) on: Jan 22, 2025

We first met Karen when we moved to Hampton in 1970. She was a sweet little 4 year old who was already very friendly and entertaining. In fact, we often remember and chuckle at Christmas time whenever we hear the carol "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy" because Karen's early version was "The Birds and Mary Had a Baby Boy". We thank God for Karen's life and are praying that He will comfort all of her family and friends during this difficult time. - Posted by: David and Gail Steeves (Friends / Former Neighbors in Hampton, NB) on: Jan 08, 2019

There are people in our lives who we meet only in passing, but they leave a lasting impression. Karen is one of those people for me. I met Karen during our chemo treatments at St. Boniface Hospital in early 2018. She was so kind and giving of herself. I did not know her well, but I could tell that she was a very special woman. I’ve thought of her often, hoping that everything was going well for her. I was very saddened to learn of her passing. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. I was fortunate enough to work at the same medical clinic as Karen for several years as her counterpart in a different department. She was my mentor and absolutely the most patient and thorough teacher I ever had the pleasure of working with. I think it was likely my initial computer incompetence and her tenancity that led us to become good friends in the workplace. Simply cannot describe the laughs we had and the bond that developed. We lost touch but I will never forget what an absolutely incredible gal she was. So sorry that she is gone and I sincerely hope her final years were happy ones. She deserved that. - Posted by: Maureen Jay (Co-worker and Friend) on: Jan 06, 2019

Knowing Karen was indeed a highlight of my life. Karen was a great friend to me for 15 years. We laughed together, we cried together. We knew each other like best friends just do. Her passing leaves me with great sadness. However, I experienced a Christmas miracle on that 23rd of December 2018. Karen and I met for coffee that day. We had a great visit and talked about what we thought 2019 might look like for both of us. As we hugged goodbye, we both said, "I love you" to each other. Neither of us knowing what was going to happen later that day. That was truly in my eyes a day that was designed by a much higher power. It was written in the universe that we were to see each other that fateful day. To which I will always be eternally grateful 💙🦋. Rest peacefully my friend. Another butterfly will be added to the gallery that we were working on. It will be the best one yet. 🙏 W - Posted by: Wendy martens (Besty) on: Jan 05, 2019
