ELVA ELIZABETH MCCARTHY It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Elva McCarthy (nee Johnson) at the age of 89 years on Friday, January 25, 2019, with family by her side. Elva was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Bill McCarthy. Elva will be sadly missed by sons, Wayne (Joanne) and Craig (Lisa), and daughter Donna (Gary); grandchildren, Lee (Tara), Brad (Amber), Stacie (Don), Shawn (Jessica), Adam and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Jet, Madison, Brooklyn, Ryker, Hayleigh and Benjamin. Elva is also survived by her brother Gordon (Sonya) and sisters-in-law, Peggy (Al) and Rory, and brother-in-law Earl, numerous other family members including Lori and Mike. Elva was born September 27, 1929 in Vita Hospital to Mary and Jacob Johnson. Elva grew up on a farm in Woodmore, Manitoba, and later moved to Winnipeg. She married Bill McCarthy on October 29, 1949. In 1954, they bought their first house and started raising a family. In 1970, Elva started working for home care until her retirement 20 years later. After her retirement, Elva volunteered at Riverview Health Centre, as well as Churchill Park United Church for several years. Elva and Bill enjoyed many years of camping at Birds Hill Park and in St. Malo. Her family was a very special part of her life. She enjoyed many one-on-one visits with the grandchildren either at home or at the trailer. They enjoyed sleepovers, camping, bike riding, walks, movies, as well as Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg Jets games. Special thanks to the staff of Golden Links Lodge for taking such great care of Elva during her stay. At Elva's request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 11, 2019, Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Avenue. A private family interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
