JO-ANN ELIZABETH KOSKIE

(SCHULTZ)

It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the sad news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Jo-Ann Elizabeth Koskie, on February 24, 2019, one month after her 75th birthday.

Mom has gone to be with her parents, Elsie and Lawrence Schultz, and brother "Bing". Left to cherish her memory and spread her love is her husband and best friend Ron, her children and 13 precious grandchildren: Scott (Jaclyn), Darian, Noah and Alina; Kristen (Glen), Madeline, Caden, Rylan and Katelyn; Kyla (Randal), Ella, Peyton and Brooklyn; Kevin (Brooke), Jackson, Elan and Eric.

Mom was one of a kind. She always wore a smile and had time for everyone. She was the best wife, mom, grandma, friend and neighbour that you could ever want.

Mom was a true lifelong St. Vital resident. She was a natural basketball player at Glenwood School, Glenlawn Collegiate and later with the St. Vital Grads, a cherished teacher from her days teaching Phys. Ed at Windsor School, a fierce competitor and teammate with the Glenbriar Ladies Curling and Curlettes of the St. Vital Curling Club and she was a fantastic golf partner with the Tuxedo ladies. Mom really was a true, natural athlete and she made friends everywhere she went. Family meant everything to Mom and nothing made her happier than watching her kids and grandkids do what they loved doing. She filled her days together with Dad following a detailed schedule that she had written out to ensure that everyone was seen and cheered for. This is what filled Mom's last day and Mom and Dad enjoyed every minute of it.

A celebration of Mom's life will take place Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Louis Riel School Division Board Office Legacy Conference Centre, 900 St. Mary's Rd. We ask you to join us in this special time of sharing and remembering.

Donation in Mom's memory can be made to Louis Riel School Division - General Trust, 900 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2M 3R3 (please indicate on the bottom of your LRSD donation - Retired Teachers' Bursary Fund), or a charity of your choice.

As a ship slowly sails into the horizon someone says...

"there she goes" as someone else says...

"here she comes".

We love you Honey, Mom, Grandma!

  • We would like to thank you again for the lovely ideas you gave Jeremy when preparing a post-graduate research and, most importantly, with regard to providing the many ideas in one blog post. Provided that we had been aware of your blog a year ago, we will have been rescued from the unwanted measures we were taking. Thank you very much. - Posted by: Claudio (We would like to thank you again for the lovely ideas you gave Jeremy when preparing a post-graduat) on: Jan 05, 2024

  • What a great pleasure it was to run into Ron and Jo-Ann, both dear friends from high school and university days, several months ago at Costco!! The conversation went long and loud and no doubt they were ready to evict us from the store!! Oddly enough I had been searching for their email address to invite them to the Nygard 50 years in business Gala..as my Very Important People from the past!! How wonderful that they attended !!! We planned many more meetings would take in the future so we would never loose touch again!! Sadly that would be the last time we would see each other in person....but so happy that meeting took place. Now I was devastated that I missed the memorial service as I neglected to check the obituary for the date, having had an extremely busy week!!! Jo-Ann (Rubber legs Schultz.. her basketball name) had to have been an ANGEL...I considered her to be my BESTIE in High School...but she was a bestie to everyone!! Evil things never came out of her mouth...her smile and her soothing persona had to be a comfort to all she met!! And WAS SHE A GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER!! She could dribble and bounce through the toughest defendants...as if she had RUBBER LEGS!! Laughter and good will were her calling cards. Through the years, I learned in various ways that Jo-Ann and Ron had been blessed with 4 talented children....at the same time as I had been blessed the same!! 2 boys 2 girls. So many times I rejoiced when a Koskie child had achieved another honour!! I knew that those children had a Mother (and a Father) who had displayed enormous love and character to guide them!! And let it be known that the added treasures of her life, the grandchildren brought her enormous joy and completion to a satisfied happy life!! RIP DEAREST FRIEND AND MAY GOD GIVE STRENGTH TO YOUR FAMILY!! LIISA NYGARD, FRIEND - Posted by: Liisa Johnson (High school friend) on: Mar 18, 2019

  • Ron, Kristen, Kyla and the entire Koskie family, We just heard about the passing of Jo Anne. We are so deeply saddened by the news and send our deepest sympathy and condolences to all. We have many memories of when I was at Dakota and the great times and conversations we had. Her legacy lives on deeply in all her family and all those she came in contact with. Our last time in Winnipeg we happened to cross paths at Superstore as we were picking up our “Canadian“ supply of goodies to take back to Texas. We had a very nice conversation and it was like we had never left. Jo-Anne asked about the kids and was very interested in how we were doing. • To Kristen, Mr. Koskie, Scott, Kayla and Kevin and your families - we were so very sorry to hear of Mrs. Koskie’s passing. On behalf of The Randle family, I offer our deepest condolences. I personally can’t think of an elementary school memory that doesn’t involve Kristen and the entire Koskie family - I will hold in my heart the boys' hockey games and Friday night sleepovers in your family room, eating the best popcorn while watching Dallas with all of you forever. - Posted by: Jenny VanDenDriessche (Randle) (Friend) on: Mar 16, 2019

  • Mrs Koskie as I knew her, was part of our Bison Basketball family. She was at most of our games over the years and especially the big ones cheering with a group of dedicated parents. She always had a smile accompanied with a “good game TL” whether it was a good game or not. I have many fond memories of Mr and Mrs Koskie cheering loudly for their Bisons. I am so sorry to hear this sad news as I know how close the Koskie clan was and is. This is such a huge loss and my heart is broken for my friend and her family. Hold each other close. On reading all the varied tributes, I recognize through them that she managed to fulfill all of her dreams. For that I am extremely happy. My condolences go out to Ron's family but take solace in the fact that you are all that much better for having had her in your lives. I envy you for that. • My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Koskie and his entire family.... Mr. and Mrs. Koskie were legendary in these parts of St. Vital. Together they raised an amazing family whose commitment to the community and sport was second to none. While growing up, Mrs. Koskie could always be counted on to stop and say hi no matter what she was up to or where she was going. For me that was such a big deal because back in grade 9, I was fortunate to have co-won the Joanne Schultz Koskie Award for basketball. What a tremendous role model she was and I will be forever grateful to her and her family for all they have done for me and for all of us in St. Vital. - Posted by: Jill Mathez (friend) on: Mar 04, 2019

  • I was very sorry to hear of Jo-Ann's (Miss Schultz's) passing. I thought of her often over the years and am surprised I never "bumped into her" as I remained in St. Vital as well. • My sincere sympathies to Ron and his family in the passing of Jo-Ann. My fondest memories of Jo-Ann are not of her athletic abilities but of her wonderful personality. As Jo-Ann and I grew up on Pilgrim Avenue, we were neighbours. Being older than I, Jo-Ann would baby sit me when my parents went out for an evening event. She was my favourite babysitter as she was so much fun and friendly. I will never forget her singing to me a song about "dancing with a dolly with a hole in her stocking". I was always disappointed when she was unavailable to baby sit me. On the death of my father, Jo-Ann was unable to attend his funeral but made the time to come to the cemetery for his internment. Jo-Ann will be sadly missed by all that knew her. - Posted by: Cheryl Wong (nee Cringan) (Childhood neighbour and friend) on: Mar 04, 2019

  • I just saw her obit today and was deeply saddened to hear about her. I will fondly remember the days on Pilgrim when we played ball and tag on the street, and her teaching me how to ride my bike. I haven't seen her probably since Mrs. Drielick's 80th birthday but whenever I saw her she always had a great big smile and we caught up on each other's news. I may not have seen her often but she will be very much missed. Sincerely, Joyce - Posted by: Joyce Hagyard (friend) on: Mar 02, 2019

  • I am so sorry to hear of Jo-Ann’s passing. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. I was fortunate enough to know her from our early school years at Glenwood and Glenlawn and, as the notice says, she was a true, natural athlete. My condolences to Ron and the family. - Posted by: Mavis (Giles) Lowenberger (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2019

  • 😢Tears today as I read (while wintering in TX). A most thoughtful & true obituary of this special person I have known since grade 7 sports at Glenwood right through to my grade 12 class at Glenlawn & then Teachers’ College. She was always our calm sports star with a keen, quiet sense of humour. The first holidays after our first teaching year & summer school was spent with Joann camping with Marlene, too, at Falcon Lake & then with Sharen along the second week in a cabin at Clear Lake. LOL! If I would have had a larger wedding party, Joann would have been my bridesmaid (which I should have insisted, but was just going with the flow of some very difficult family circumstances at the time.) As much as I did not see Joann very often in our married years (in part caused by my various moves), I loved it when we did get together or get in touch. A group of us old gals spent our 65th BD year out for supper together at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. — My sincere sympathy to Ron & all the family in your loss & time of great sorrow. Wish I could be at the memorial, but I am alone with two old dogs & pulling a little trailer when I return to my current home in Prince Albert, SK. in about a mon. — Be at rest dear Joann = a very well lived life indeed❣️ - Posted by: Grace Dansereau (Kennington) (Friend from junior high sports days) on: Mar 02, 2019
