DAMASO VERGA Damaso (Jun) Verga, Jr. met our Father in Heaven on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the age of 69. Papa Jun, as we fondly called him, is survived by his wife, Precy Verga (nee Javier); his children, Jen Navasca (Melvyn) and Jerry Verga (Veronica); his grandchildren, Patrick, Matthew, Sarah and Derrick; his stepbrother, Victor Samalea (Clarita); his sister-in-law, Placida Verga (nee Dimaray); and his brother-in-law, Sesinando Samarista. He was predeceased by his parents, Damaso Verga, Sr. and Maria Samalea (nee Leonor); and his siblings, Emiliana, Adela, Egmidio, Hilarion, Beata, Romeo and Estrella. Jun was born in Polangui, Albay, Philippines on August 26, 1949. He graduated from the University of the East where he met Precy on March 21, 1969. They secretly married in Cainta (Philippines) on February 9, 1974 and married officially at St. Joseph's Church in Winnipeg on October 30, 1976. He immigrated to Winnipeg on October 1, 1976 and was the first in the Verga family to move to Canada. From there he and Precy were able to sponsor multiple families who lived with them over the years. Jun worked as a CNC Machine Operator at Canadian Tool & Die for 36 years. Some of his favourite activities included: coaching slo-pitch baseball, fishing and camping, long driving in 'the big blue van', gardening, and watching Goldeyes baseball games. He was a spiritual man; he prayed weekly with the Penafrancia Group of Winnipeg, was a leader in Couples for Christ, and was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding and proud member of the Bicol Association of Manitoba. Papa Jun was friendly, full of laughter, always smiling and willing to give a helping hand. He will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Jun's words to live by: "Love, Unity and Understanding". Lamay will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, March 22, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
