RUTH THOMAS With sadness we announce the death of Ruth Thomas (nee Allison), on March 19, 2019, at 97 years old. She is survived by her sister Muriel Ireland (Bill); her children, Ralph Thomas (Maureen) and Averil Brent (Doug), and six grand-daughters. Her husband Peter passed away in 2002. Ruth was born in 1921, and grew up on the family farm near Roland, Manitoba. She went to school by horse and buggy, and lived to see the internet age. In 1953, she took a trip to Europe by ship, and on board met her future husband Peter, from New Zealand. They married in 1954, in Winnipeg, and have lived here ever since. She worked at Great West Life, raised two kids, and worked for cancer research scientists, transcribing their findings. She was a longtime volunteer for the Children's Hospital Book Market. Ruth and Peter travelled all over the world, and camped in Mexico with a station wagon and pop-up tent camper for many years. Ruth loved to read in spite of having cataracts at a young age, and swam for exercise well in to her 80's. She always had a positive attitude, and a sharp wit. No public service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I remember Ruth and Peter fondly from their days volunteering with the Book Market. Both of them were very devoted to the cause and their efforts were applauded at many events since their “retirement”. My condolences to the family. They are missed. • Dear Averil (Doug) & Ralph (Maureen). We were so sad to hear of your mom's passing. She will always be 'Aunty Ruth' to us. We have so many warm memories of being in your family home in Wildwood Park. The door jam in the kitchen that she wouldn't paint because it had your growth charts on it. Listening to the 'Beyond the Fringe' records in the stairway alcove. Sitting in the backyard in the Andirondak chairs. Having dinner in your home with our parents and listening to their laughter as they reminisced. Your mom had such a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. But what we remember most is how warm and welcoming she was to us. We loved being in your home. Rest in peace Aunty Ruth.
