LAURA ELIZABETH (BETTY) PERDUE
(nee SHAVER)

On Monday, May 6, 2019, Betty Perdue passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age 90 years with her family by her side.
Betty was predeceased by her loving
husband of 57 years, John "Joe" Perdue, parents, Franklin and Mabel Shaver, and stepbrothers, Jack and Allan Shaver.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, John, Michael, Gordon (Holly),
Marie (Erik) and Lori (Ron) and grandchildren, Faith and Darci, Ben and Christopher, Liam and Aidan, Sophie and Simone.
Laura Elizabeth "Betty" Perdue was born September 16, 1928 in Matilda, Dundas
County, Ontario. She was the only child born to Franklin and Mabel Shaver. Together with her two stepbrothers, Allan and Jack, she was raised on a family farm near Iroquois, Ontario. After graduating high school, Betty entered the nursing program at Kingston General Hospital (KGH), School of Nursing in Kingston, Ontario. She graduated from KGH and obtained her R.N. licence in 1951. While she was attending nursing school, Betty was introduced to a handsome young man named John Joseph Perdue (Joe). After courting for four years, they married in Kingston, Ontario, in 1954 and began an amazing, caring and loving relationship that lasted over 57 years.
Five children were brought into this loving couples life, John, Michael, Gordon, Marie and Lori. Betty continued her nursing career after the birth of her first child John. After the birth of their second child Michael, the couple moved to Winnipeg. Here, Betty
became a full-time mother to her five children and adoringly cared for them and her beloved husband. She loved being a
mother and worked very hard at those duties. In 1969, the couple moved, to London, Ontario and it was here that she returned to the work force as an R.N. Joe's career then brought them back to Winnipeg three years later and this is where they lived for the remainder of their lives. After returning to Winnipeg, Betty began working at Bethania Personal Care Home as an R.N. and later becoming a Nursing Co-ordinator. She truly enjoyed her nursing career and retired at the age of 65.
In her retirement years, Betty looked
forward to doing some of her passions;
travelling, camping, gardening and
completing the newspaper crossword puzzles. Betty and Joe spent many winters on the beach in Hawaii soaking up the sun. They especially enjoyed when their children and grandchildren would come to visit them in Hawaii. Together with Joe, they also enjoyed camping which they did often. This was a special time for them as they explored different campgrounds and made many new friends in their travels (both in Canada and the US). Betty loved gardening and enjoyed canning and preserving the bounty from her garden, which was in high demand from her children. She definitely had a green thumb and could grow almost anything she set her mind to from vegetables to her impressive show of summer flowers. She would encourage everyone to stop by to stay for visits and dinner or whatever we had time to fit in; often sending home care packages of fresh vegetables.
Mom was an incredibly loving, intelligent, beautiful, funny, hardworking woman who deeply loved her husband, children and grandchildren and they in return all loved her very, very much.
Mom was dedicated to her family throughout her life and this was highlighted in later years when she was such a great source of support and wonderful, nurturing care for Joe. This nurturing care was lovingly returned to her in later years by her children. In particular her eldest son John, who made sure his mother and father lived an exceptional life of travel, and in their later years allowing them to enjoy the comforts of their own home.
Our hearts are saddened and broken at this time, there are no word to describe how much Mom is loved and she will forever be missed; she will stay in our hearts for eternity.
We would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their wonderful care, in particular Karen, Caroline, Mary Lou, Jonathan, Chris, Dr. Alexy and many others. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Merna for watching over Mom and for providing such special, thoughtful care and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
