NANCY POPIEL
1919 - 2019

Nancy Popiel (nee Skomoroski) was born on January 23, 1919. Hers was the 13th birth certificate registered in Transcona, and she lived there most of her 100 years.
Nancy married Peter Popiel in 1941; in the nearly 50 years they were married they had three children, five grandchildren and (after Peter's death in 1992) four great-grandchildren. She worked more than 25 years at the Paddlewheel Restaurant in the Hudson's Bay downtown.
Nancy had boundless energy and a fiercely independent spirit. She was always active: she sewed, knitted, made ceramics, perogy-pinched, gardened and walked for miles. Her great-grandsons were her pride and joy. She lived in her house until she was 90, and in her own apartment until she was 99. She celebrated her centenary in January, surrounded by family.
Nancy passed peacefully on May 9, 2019, ready to join Peter and her son Tony.
She will be remembered with love by her daughter Phyllis Sawatzky (Ken), son Jerry Popiel (Anita Vergnano), daughter-in-law Kay Popiel; grandchildren, Wendy Sawatzky (Jason Hooper), Karen McRae (Rod), Natasha Popiel (Mike Brock), Alexandra Popiel and Nick Popiel; and great-grandsons, Nathan, Evan, Holden and Bodhi.
Many thanks to the staff of Donwood Personal Care Home 2 North for their care and compassion in the past year.
At Nancy's request, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, Nancy would ask friends to plant a remembrance in their garden.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My condolences to Phyllis, Jerry, Wendy and Karen and their families on the loss of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. I've known Mrs. Popiel since the time Jerry and my brother became friends in school. Whenever I met her she always had a smile on her face and a cheery hello. My mother missed her company when she moved out of Transcona as they both attended the same senior group and perogy making at their church. My thoughts are with you all at this time - Posted by: E.
