VERNA EVANKEVICH
(nee WINTONIW)
October 4, 1932 - August 23, 2019
She was predeceased by her loving husband Tony in 2000; her six brothers; and parents, Nicolas and Anastasias Wintoniw.
She is survived by her daughter Elaine Register (Steve), her two grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) and Brent (Meghan), and her two great-grandchildren, Maxton and Calia, along with many nieces and nephews.
Verna was a devoted Catholic and donated a lot of time to the Catholic Women's League. She served as President twice, she sang in the church choir for many years, all the while helping the community with many charitable causes. As was typical at the time, Tony and Verna started life together from the ground up with a lot of commitment. They started out with a general store, then moving on with a gas station and coffee shop in Zhoda, and finally ending up with a very successful construction and lumber business in Beausejour, followed with them retiring and moving to Winnipeg. She loved to garden, and her flower presentations won many awards, along with that her passions were writing, painting Easter eggs, fishing and lately playing pool at the Villa. Together Verna and Tony travelled many places, but the highlight was travelling to Ukraine, which was also her parent's birthplace. Many of her friends called her Smiley because she always came up with the perfect remark at the right time with a smile. In her later years she loved doing puzzles and playing cards with her friends at the Villa.
Service will be held to celebrate Verna's life at the Glen Lawn Funeral Chapel at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB, Thursday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m.
Special thanks to staff at the Grace Hospital for their great care given to Verna during her stay, as well as the many friends that helped her along the way.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
