JOHN CECHVALA
March 28, 1925 - September 13, 2019
John was predeceased by Emily, his beloved wife of 65 years; his parents, Michael and Elizabeth; siblings, Annie, Joseph, Cyril, Ethel, Frank and Alphonse; son-in-law, Tim Reader; and granddaughter, Cheri Giesbrecht.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Dianne, Carol (Lorne), Bill (Marie), Angie, Ron, Brian (Val), Laurie and Nyla (Darrell); grandchildren: Charlene, Graham (Nancy), Sarina, Brandy (Garth), Lorne (Amelia), Douglas, Ashley (Adam), Raeann (Cam), Lindsey (Jamie) and Nicole; great-grandchildren: Brandon, Geoffrey, Jason, Tyler, Nathan, Janessa, Andrew, Trinity, Athena and Ashlee; sister, Mary; sisters-in-law: Diane and Edna; and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was born in Korytne, Slovakia on March 28, 1925 and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1938 and eventually settled in Lorette. Dad helped worked the family farm until he enlisted in the army in 1943 and served till 1945. He met Emily in December of 1946 and they married just six months later on June 28, 1947. They settled in Zeneta, Saskatchewan and farmed there for nine years. In 1956 they relocated to Manitoba with five children by that time. They stayed with Dad's parents for a while and then in early 1957 they bought a home in Transcona, where they both lived till the end of their lives. Dad had gained employment with CNR and continued his employment with them until his retirement in 1990.
Dad was a loving father and grandfather and was his happiest when the house was full of family and friends. His door was always open. Dad loved to work in his vegetable garden. Every summer, we children would almost always leave with fresh vegetables in hand. After retirement, he also took up wood crafting, every new grandchild would receive a handcrafted horse carousel. Dad will truly be missed by all. We love you Dad.
A special thank you to all the staff of North N1 at Concordia Hospital who took care of Dad in his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Monday, September 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes can make a donation to a charity of their choice in Dad's name.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Brian and the Cechvala Family on the passing of their dear father, grandfather, and great grandfather. I worked with John on and off from 1974 to his retirement. What a great sense of humour he had, with the biggest smile I’d ever seen. We’d all crowd into his little supply room and listen to Peter Warren on CJOB and then give our 2 cents worth after the show. Good thing the room was small as it was just a little to small for dunking it out lol, believe me we tried. That room was about 3.5’ x 8’ and we got as many as 8 people into it and more outside the door listening to that crazy temperamental radio show. What a great job we all had lol. Anyways there were lots of different stories like that and how I missed him when he retired. It just wasn’t the same when John went into retirement. I had for years ment to go visit with him even with Brian reminding me, but unfortunately I didn’t. I’m a procrastinator, that was a huge downfall on my part for not seeing John again. I now live in Kelowna and keep in touch with several retired CN friends. There aren’t many of us left from Johns era, but in time we’ll all be together again. I consider myself very lucky to have had John as a friend and his son Brian too. Great family you all are. Again my deepest condolences for you loss. John was a great guy and I had many memories of him and his antics at work. I thank you for sharing him with us in the short amount of time we all worked together. I was so lucky to spent many days running around the Cechvala home as a little girl. I called John and Emily “Mom and Dad” So much love and food in their house and the best “milk soup” and “spider cookies”. Such happy memories.
