ZYGMUNT KOZLOWSKI
September 8, 1927 - September 14, 2019

Peacefully, on Saturday, September 14, 2019, Zygmunt Kozlowski passed away in the early hours at Grace Hospital. He had celebrated his 92nd birthday just days earlier.
Zygmunt was predeceased by his daughter Barbara (1972), wife Janina (2011), brothers, Chris (1987) and Walter (2019) and recently niece Mary (2018).
Left to mourn his passing are daughter Yolanda (Lane), grandchildren, Gabrielle and Eric, sister Irene (Albin), nieces and nephews, and former son-in-law Anthony Nowakowski.
Zygmunt was born on September 8, 1927 in Drobowaldy, Poland. During the war, he along with his mother and sister, were deported to Russia. After the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement in 1941 was signed, many survivors, including Zygmunt, were released and evacuated from the Soviet Union to Palestine via Egypt and Persia. He was part of the Young Soldiers Cadet School (Junacka Szkola Kadetów) in Bashshit, Palestine. Although it was difficult being separated from his mother and sister, Zygmunt found his time in the Middle East as one of adventure and camaraderie. Those were times he reminisced throughout his life. After the war, he returned to Poland, married Janina (Jean) Pniewska and had a daughter Yolanda. In 1959 he, along with his mother Julia, sister Irene and brother-in-law Albin, emigrated to Canada to join older brothers, Walter and Czeslaw (Chris). Janina and Yolanda followed in 1960. In 1962, second daughter Barbara was born. In Canada, he and his brother Chris operated European Jewellers until Chris's untimely death in 1987. Zygmunt created beautiful pieces that are cherished by his family, friends and customers. Zygmunt continued to freelance jewellery repair into his 80s. A tragic blow was experienced by Zygmunt when youngest daughter Barbara died at the age of 10 from cancer. Yet despite the tragedies and hardships experienced, life continued with laughter and great hospitality with what seemed like a steady stream of guests at his home in Windsor Park. He loved to fish at Sandy Hook and Gimli and to go mushroom picking with friends in Belair and Sandilands. Zygmunt was an active member of Sokol #2 Polish Gymnastics Association and a longtime member of St. Andrews Bobola Roman Catholic Church. He was very proud of his daughter Yolanda and grand-children, Gabrielle and Eric and their
accomplishments.
Sincerest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Tuxedo Villa where "Ziggy" resided and to Grace Hospital for providing
exemplary care during his emergency visits. Dad, Grandpa you will be sadly missed. Wieczny Odpoczynek Racz Mu Dac Panie. Ich z Bogem. To a life well lived.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrew Bobola Roman Catholic Church, 541 Marion Street, on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.
