DOREEN NICOL

Quietly, on the afternoon of October 18, 2019, Doreen passed away at Oakview Place.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her son Grant and daughter Lynn. Many good memories are also shared by extended family and friends.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband Ken and daughter-in-law Sharon.
Mum was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire on April 9, 1925 to Jessie and Walter Maycock. She came to Canada after the Second World War and originally settled in Calgary. Later, she moved to Trail, B.C. where she met Dad. They were married in 1953 and then moved to Winnipeg, Dad's home town, where they had 60 years together before Dad's death in 2013.
For most of her working life in Winnipeg, Mum was employed as a secretary by Winnipeg School Division #1. She went back to work in the 1963 with the goal of earning the required funds to take Grant and Lynn to meet their grandparents in England. Mum enjoyed her job and chose to remain working at WSD until her retirement in 1985.
Mum was an avid reader. She also enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas where she liked to play the slots, especially video poker. Her other major pastimes were watching sports and cheering on the Jets and Bombers.
We extend a big thank you to Mum's second family at Oakview Place whose caring and compassion, particularly in Mum's final days, were much appreciated.
In accordance with Mum's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

  • My first job coming out of high school was in the Secretary-Treasurer's Dept. at WSD#1. Doreen was one of the ladies who I worked with. She quickly took me under her wing to teach me the ropes. She shared her expertise with patience and laughter, which I greatly appreciated. She helped make my first work experience a good one. My deepest sympathy to her family. The world has lost a great lady! - Posted by: Angie Kaufmann (former co-worker) on: Oct 29, 2019
