DORA VIRGINIA HILL
(nee WAITE)
January 25, 1929 - November 5, 2019
Dora is survived by her husband of 70 years Bernard; children, Richard, Lesley (Conrad), David (Karen) and Murray (Angela); grandchildren, Russell (Katie), Stephen, Erin (Dwight), Carrie, Jeff (Jen) and Shannon (Christian); and great-grandchildren, Jarret, Amy, Riley, Collin, Jaden and Lexton; as well as many nieces, nephews and too many friends to count. Dora was predeceased by her daughter Gloria in 2005.
Dora grew up in the Weston area of Winnipeg during the Depression and Second World War as one of seven siblings. As a young woman, she worked for Birks Jewelers. She married Bernard in 1949 and raised her family in East Kildonan, where she worked part-time at a local restaurant and drugstore. She was a leader of the CGIT church group for girls at the Morse Place United Church, with many members becoming lifelong friends. Dora was a very active person, and enjoyed skating, bowling, time at the cottage, trips to California, Las Vegas and Victoria, Christmas baking, needlepoint and knitting for the Salvation Army and various churches, and Thursdays at the casino.
Dora had a larger than life personality which filled any room she was in. She loved life and lived it to the fullest every day. She was a very creative person, often writing poems, stories and songs, and endlessly entertaining her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with inventive games and activities. She loved her family dearly, and family gatherings of any kind, especially Christmas, were precious to her. She was also a fighter, refusing to let anyone or anything get the better of her. Dora was a force of nature, and will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
A celebration of Dora's life will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Avenue at Henderson Highway.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dora's name to the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
