ALEXANDER JOHN POPP
father and grandfather on November 19, 2019, while surrounded by family at the Grace Hospital.
Alex was born May 21, 1932 to Alex and Leola and raised in Winnipeg. He began
working with CP Rail on May 5, 1952. He met Lily in 1960 in Dominion City while working on the CP Rail Signal gang. They married on March 11, 1961. Their son David was born on January 3, 1963 in Moose Jaw, SK, followed by their daughter Debbie on January 20, 1965. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1966.
Alex loved to restore old cars, and had a special love for model As. Two of his special projects were his 1938 Woody Station Wagon, and his 1930 2 door Phaeton. He was a
devoted member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, played the harmonica, and participated in numerous church activities. He also played in the
Winnipeg Harmonica Band. He enjoyed
yodelling, and was later involved in the
Parkinson's exercise and drumming groups. He liked his car club meetings, and the
weekly church breakfast gathering. His greatest joy was spending time and visiting with family and his beloved granddaughters who always left with the words "Grandpa loves you". He retired from the railway in 1987. He and Lily enjoyed many winters in Phoenix, Arizona.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Leola and also his sister Audrey Forgues.
He leaves to mourn his wife Lily of 58 years, son David (Teresa), daughter Debbie Inglis (Duncan), his cherished grand-daughters, Tori, Heather, Dana and Hannah, his sister Dorothy Pond and brother Murray, sister-in-law Alvina Turner (Morris), nephew Brent Meyer (Carol), niece Llyn Towel (Guy), nephew Ken Forgues, and niece Tannis
Turner (Peter) along with many great-nieces and nephews, and other family members and dear friends.
The family wish to thank the doctors,
nurses and staff on 3 North at the Grace
Hospital for all their kindness. And a special thank you to Dr. Smil and Dr. Hobson for their many years of care and dedication. Thank you as well to all the home care staff and nurses who attended to provide comfort at home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba or Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Dear Lil, Debbie & Duncan, David & Teresa, Murray & Alvina, as well as other family members: No one can experience this sadness as you do, as your feelings are unique/personal to you. But if you need comfort and some help to see you through, know how much you are cared for by everyone who is thinking of you. Al was pretty special!! On a personal note, I would like to think my mother and Al are practicing their yodelling and harmonicas. You are all in my prayers. Lois Casper - Posted by: Lois Casper (Family) on: Nov 28, 2019

Sincere condolences to Lily and family. I got to know Alex through the Parkinson exercise group, and got to know him better when we started a Drum Circle for Parkinson's people. We often met in Alex's basement, followed by tea & baking and conversation. Alex was a kind and gentle man, and Lily was a gracious hostess. He lived a good life, and left many good memories. He will truly be missed. - Posted by: Doug Jentsch (A Parkinson friend) on: Nov 27, 2019

Al was a very special person. He loved everyone he met, and told them so. You always felt wanted and appreciated when you were around Al. He and Lil have done so much for Prince of Peace Church. He was instrumental in starting many groups, either for fundraising, or for fellowship. The Perogy makers was my favorite group. Al & Lil kept that going for so many years. The fellowship that was shared during that time brought everyone closer together. Even though it was a lot of hard work, especially for Lil, we all enjoyed our time together and were able to fundraise to purchases needed things for our Church. Al changed the life of one person in particular, Thierry. Al spent so much time communicating with him while Thierry was waiting in a Refugee camp. Al was his lifeline and helped make it possible for Thierry to come to Canada, where he now lives and has a family. Al cared about people and showed it. He was a very special man indeed. He will be in my heart forever. - Posted by: Liz Chammartin (friend) on: Nov 27, 2019

We are saddened to hear the passing of a kind and loving friend, Al Popp. He had always welcomed us without reservation, brightened our days with his jokes, shared the beauty of God’s love and music through his harmonica. We remember how beautiful it was when he played the harmonica during our son’s Cris baptism and gave Ryan a brand new harmonica to play. As much as we are very sad to hear his passing, we know he is now in Heaven, free from suffering, rejoicing and reigning with Jesus. He will be so sorely missed as we remember him in our hearts. Rene cut Alex's hair for about 40 years at Cottonwood Barbershop. Alex was such a great person. I, Lorraine, got to know Alex really well when he had to make appointments when Rene cut hair at our house. I loved to talk to Alex, such a great man. Sorry for your loss. He will be very much missed. - Posted by: Rene & Lorraine Hebert (Barber & barbers wife Lorraine) on: Nov 25, 2019

It is with great sadness and at the same time joy of hearing that Al passed. Sadness that his family and friends will be grieving but then happiness as he ran a good race and was greeted with the words “my good and faithful servant“. We met the Popp’s when my daughter and I moved to Winnipeg. Al, my wife and I sang in the church choir at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Thank you Al for all you have provided. The Lord blessed you. - Posted by: Greg & Penny Grout (Friends) on: Nov 24, 2019

Although Al is in reality a cousin through marriage I will fondly remember him as Uncle Al. Even though there was a 25 year age difference between us, when I was young I always looked forward to seeing Uncle Al. Uncle Al would speak with us as kids, joke with us, and also have the odd magic trick to show us. I always remembered a card trick he would do but as a true magician he never divulged the secret. When I got older and had kids of my own I had figured it out and was able to perform it for them. Everytime I would do this trick and see the look of amazement on their faces I would think of Uncle Al. You will be missed Uncle Al. - Posted by: Chris Kasper (Cousin-in-law) on: Nov 24, 2019
