DONALD (DON) (BO) MCARTHUR
October 18, 1929 - December 20, 2019

Don passed away peacefully at 90 years young, predeceased by his first wife Jean, their daughter Wendy, and second wife Lorraine.
He is survived by his sons, Murray (Kathy) and Darren (Gil), Lorraine's children, Cynthia (Robert), Edward (Heather) and George (Roberta); many grandchildren (13) and great-grandchildren (six). Don is also survived by his brother Jack (Diane), stepsister Irene, and nieces (four).
Don was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba four days before the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 (which he sometimes said he caused?), grew up in Dauphin and later in Montreal, moving back to Winnipeg in his early 20s. A favourite story (one of literally hundreds) of his was rowing in a boat across the Elm Park Bridge (Bridge Drive In) during the great flood of 1950 to get to his bosses house to sandbag! Don worked as a locomotive engineer on the CNR for 38 years, where he picked up the nickname "BO" from his fellow co-workers, short for Hobo or travelling storyteller. Being a locomotive engineer was a family vocation as his father and brother were both 30 plus years with the CNR in Montreal.
He lived on Oakwood Avenue in Riverview for over 60 years, and had the same phone number for all of them, imagine! In his retirement years, he and Lorraine were avid snowbirds and enjoyed their home in Florida, and sharing the sunshine with everyone. Don spent his last few years residing at the Winnipeg Canoe Club, not far from Riverview where he participated in fashion shows, won a bowling championship and thoroughly enjoyed his time there. As everyone there knew Don! Don would not want anyone to spend their money on flowers for his funeral. Instead, he would be tickled "orange" if you planted flowers in your garden this spring or took you and your family out to a movie, a concert or a nice meal at a locally owned restaurant. He lived a very full and happy life, and we are honoured to celebrate the dash between the day he entered this world and the day he left it, we encourage you to do the same.
A celebration of Don's life will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2J 4J4, on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 2:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Having been part of the McArthur family for 15 years, I have fond memories of Don and Lorraine and their children. I am saddened to find out they both passed away. I offer my deepest sympathies to the family. Don & Lorraine (used to call them Moms & Pops) were good people. I'm sure they will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing them. May you both Rest In Peace and continue enjoying the Daily Happy Hours. xox - Posted by: Sylvain Plasse (Friend) on: Jun 07, 2020
