MATTHEW LEWIS SCHILLER
April 11, 1952 - February 2, 2020
Mattie will be greatly missed by his partner Ken and a host of close friends, from work and from his school days. He is survived by his sister Barbara (Steve) and niece Mai-Ling (Pete), all in Toronto. He was predeceased by his father Matthew and mother Doreen and his nephew Jason.
After high school, Matthew attended Red River College for a course in Business
Administration, then left for an extended stay in London, England to visit a pen pal. Upon
returning to Winnipeg, he spent a couple of years in Actors' Showcase before leaving again on travels to Vancouver and parts of the States. His work life started at the
Viscount Gort in front desk administration for a number of years. The next few years were spent as a ward clerk in the Emergency department at Grace Hospital, and in 1992, he started in the ward at 3-North. He transferred to 1-North, Psychiatry, in 2003, until his
retirement in 2011. He then worked casual for a few years afterward. He enjoyed
planning trips and over the years he and Ken made many excursions to Florida, Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii and Italy.
Everyone who knew Matthew will attest to his kindness, amazing personality, his sharp wit, his droll humour and sense of fun. During his time at the Grace, he collected a group of wonderful close friends. Much appreciated is all the support provided during his illness by Val, Glenda, Helen, Lorraine and many other co-workers from Psychiatry. Betty, Sandra and Lynne were co-workers in 3-North and have been friends with Matthew for many years. Their help is so much appreciated
Life long friends Marion, Judy and Janice meant the world to Mattie and he loved his walks around "the loop" with Marion, and his regular walks with all of them around Kildonan Park, even though, as the organizer, he often said how difficult it was to decide on a day, and time, that worked for everyone.
To Dr. Gordon, Dr. Ogaranko and all the caregivers at Buhler Cancer Centre and at the Palliative Care Unit your care and
understanding have meant so much to both Matthew and Ken.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of Mattie's life later, time and place to be determined.
Flowers are gratefully declined; those who wish, may make a contribution to either Buhler Cancer Centre or the St. Boniface
Palliative Care Unit.

I met up with Matthew when he started at Emergency at the Grace Hospital. We made an instant connection when we realized that my sister-in-law was a work acquaintance from his days at The Viscount. I loved his sense of humour but admired his respect for patients and coworkers alike. He will be dearly missed. Deepest sympathy to Ken and all of Matthew's family. - Posted by: Barbara Larkin (Coworker/friend) on: Feb 28, 2020

Matthew was a friend an co-worker since 2003...he will be remembered for being kind, loyal, patient and compassionate to all. He treated all the patients with respect and kindness...had the ability to make a stressful day at work easier for everyone. He was a great friend and will be missed. Thoughts are with Ken and Matthew’s family. - Posted by: Valerie Douglas (Friend/ Co-worker) on: Feb 21, 2020

Upon meeting Matthew for the first time at Betty and Sandra's we immediately became friends. Mattie's laugh/wit warmed my heart and although we didn't get to see each other very often thinking of him will always make me smile. He will be missed! My condolences to Ken and Family. - Posted by: Jean LeBlanc (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2020

We have known Mattie (and Ken) casually for a number of years. Mattie’s character was easy to judge and easy to like. He was a kind and gentle soul. We are especially thankful to have had the opportunity to speak briefly with Mattie this past Christmas Day. These words accurately describe Mattie. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Our deepest condolences for your tremendous loss, Ken. R.I.P. - Posted by: Ross & Leslie (Casual Acquaintances ) on: Feb 08, 2020
