ALLISON STEPHANSON

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother and dear friend, Allison Stephanson (nee Smith). She left this life, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.
Allison will be forever missed by her loving husband Rob, and sons, Mitchell (Tara) and Brady (Stephanie). Allison was predeceased by her parents, Gord and Joyce Smith, and will never be forgotten by brother Greg Smith (Mary), sister Jill Coulter (Brian), and all of her and Rob's extended families.
Allison was born September 22, 1964, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in the Fort Garry community where bonds began to form with her lifelong girlfriends. She attended Vincent Massey Collegiate and excelled at all sports but her passion was volleyball. She was part of the Manitoba Canada Games team winning a national title. She went on to play at the University of Winnipeg, and with her fellow teammates won a record four national titles with her team and has now been entered into the Canada West Hall of Fame. As proud as she was of accomplishments on the volleyball court it was the lifelong friends and memories during this time that she cherished most.
Allison joined the Winnipeg Police Service in 1988 when there were only a few women on the job. She was always highly respected by the men and became a mentor to many of the women that followed her. Allison rose through the ranks within the Winnipeg Police Service and retired in 2014 at the rank of Inspector. She worked in all areas of the Service and was loved and respected by all her brothers and sisters of her WPS family. It was in the summer of 1989, working in the good old North End, that she met her best friend and love of her life Rob. Their mutual respect and friendship grew and they were married in 1992. Alley was immediately accepted and loved by all of Rob's family. They moved to the Island Lakes area where they raised Mitch and Brady and made many great friends in the neighbourhood. Her greatest accomplishment and the one she was most proud of are her two boys, Mitch and Brady. She was so proud of the great young men they have become and completely fell in love with their girls, Tara and Steph. Her beloved dog Cabela will miss their morning coffee together and spending time on the cabin deck. Alley enjoyed many adventures with her family and friends but her favourite of these were the many ski trips out west where she taught all the kids to ski as she was taught by her dad at a very young age. She also loved the "Apres Ski" time at the end of a great day on the slopes. Alley loved to spend time at the cabin, trips to the mountains and winters away from Winnipeg exploring sunny beaches. She has left us too soon and still had many adventures to check off her "bucket list".
Alley, Rob and their extended families would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Doctor Banerji, Doctor Rathod and all the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, as well as the tremendous care at the Victoria General Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Alley's honour.
Please join Alley's family and friends in celebrating her life on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, 281 Donald Street at 2:00 p.m.

As I have not been close to you both over the years, know, both of you have touched my life and Ali will not be easily forgotten. Prayers and Hugs. • Allison was always a friendly face and support. I admired her no nonsense approach, amazing work ethic and her deep and unabiding integrity. I was very lucky to have worked along side her. At a time when there were few female role models in the WPS she lead just by being herself and made herself available to both male and female members... We miss her. • Rob, my heart truly goes out to you buddy! I can't imagine the pain and heartbreak you are experiencing at this time and my thoughts are with you. Ally was truly one of the "good ones" but you already know that and always will. I guess I will experience this eventually as my wife is also suffering from the effects of a long term terminal cancer the complications of which are not relevant right now. The blight of the big "C" is becoming unfathomable and has touched each of us somewhere, somehow at sometime. So please take some comfort (for what it's worth) that you are not alone and never will be. We are all struggling with this pain in some way, but yours is at the top of the list right now...hopefully, in time, it will subside and begin to heal somewhat for you. Sincerely, Tim - Posted by: Tim Turner (former co-worker, friend) on: Feb 11, 2020

  • Rob, Mitch, Brady, Jill, & Greg So sad to learn of Alli's passing. She was always so much fun to be around. Often leading to some interesting adventures. Most memorable was hoisting her ( with here knee in a cast) over the railing at Oreste's Calgary the night of the rehearsal dinner. We were escaping the tab for the rehearsal dinner. Thankfully, it was all saved by Grandpa Gord! Many great laughs and fond memories. - Posted by: Mike, Molly, Maddie, Noah Etahn (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2020

  • It is with a very heavy heart that I pass along my condolences to Rob and the entire family. I have know Allison since kindergarten and have too many fond memories to count growing up with Allison. I left Winnipeg in 1990 and although we did not have much contact since my moving, the few times I did see Alley since I moved away it was as if no time had passed. Her smile, her laugh and her love of friends and family is something I will never forget. The many pool parties in high school, the ski trips we took back in those days and the parties we had were so much fun and wouldn't have been the same without her. I only hope that you all can take some solace in this terrible time in the fact that she was loved by so many Glenn Sayers - Posted by: Glenn Sayers (Long time friend) on: Feb 09, 2020

I recall spending time with her in her office in Human Resources seeking her sage advice which she gave generously and patiently, she always had time to talk. I appreciated her warm spirit, energy and smile... things always seemed more fun when she was around. Rob, Mitch and Brady, I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Gord Friesen (Friend and co-worker) on: Feb 08, 2020

  • Collette and I am so sorry to hear of Alli's passing. She was a beautiful person inside and out. • I want to send my deepest condolences and respects to you Rob, Mitchell, and Brady. I grew up knowing Allison since we entered kindergarten, and the Smith family all the way through our teen and adolescent years. I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss. We have known your mom to always be a strong person who cares more of others than any needs she may require. It's hard now to realize, but she will always be with you, supporting and cheering you on. Warmest wishes and condolences to yourselves and every life she influenced.... RIP beautiful lady. - Posted by: CRAIG BACHYNSKI (FRIEND) on: Feb 08, 2020
