GARY GORDON BEAZLEY

Gary Beazley, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Tyson) Beazley, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2020.
Gary was born in Winnipeg on September 30, 1937, and was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Bessie.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Liz, sons, Gord (Pamela) and Bruce, daughter Mary (Kirk), and grandchildren, Holly and Jack Suggitt and Rachel and Julia Beazley. He is also survived by his brother Norman (Louise), his sister Linda and her family, and his sister-in-law Judy Tyson and her family. He was predeceased by his dear friend and brother-in-law, Buzz Tyson.
After growing up in Port Arthur, Ontario, Gary moved back to Winnipeg in the fall of 1955 to pursue a career in medicine. It was there that he met Liz, who was then a student nurse at Winnipeg General Hospital. Gary and Liz married in 1960 and together spent almost six decades building a wonderful life centered around family and dedication to providing excellent medical care and training.
Gary spent the first decade of his career practicing in the Transcona Medical Group and making house calls throughout Transcona and the surrounding area. In the early 1970s, with the support of the Grey Nuns, he and three colleagues were asked to develop a family physician training program. The Family Medical Centre at St. Boniface Hospital and the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Manitoba were born from this work, growing from just two residents in 1973 to 150 residents across 10 sites today. Gary taught for almost three decades, served as department head, and earned the designation of Professor Emeritus. After retiring from the university, Gary spent the last 10 years of his career with the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre and the Workers Compensation Board.
In 1999, Gary was very honoured to be named Manitoba Family Physician of the Year, and later, to have the Patient's Medical Home Award established in his name. This award annually recognizes a medical clinic that embodies the pillars of care for which Gary advocated for most of his career, including: continuity of care, interprofessional teams, quality improvement and patient-centered care.
The place our dad most loved to be was at Florence Lake (Winnitoba) with his family. It was there that he and Liz built their cottage in 1968, next door to Liz's original family cottage. In 1976, Gary and Gord built a log sauna which is to this day a very popular gathering spot for the "occasional" gin and tonic. The cottage was a launching spot for Gary's treasured canoe trips - first with Gord and Bruce, then Mary and finally with Gord and granddaughter Rachel. Gary loved canoeing, hiking, fishing, chopping firewood and picking blueberries. The lake was also a great training ground for the many marathons Gary ran, including the inaugural Manitoba Marathon.
The family would like to thank the staff of Concordia and St. Boniface General Hospitals for their kind and compassionate care of our father and husband.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 22, at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.

Condolences & Memories (23 entries)

  • I remember my classmate Gary Beazley as a warm-hearted person who made friends easily, and was regarded highly by his fellow students. Though absent from Winnipeg since the early 1960's I was well aware of Gary's enormous contributions to Manitoba Medicine where he was a 'trailblazer' in the development of Family Medicine. I am sure his life has been an inspiration to many. Please accept my sincere condolences on his passing. May his memory be a blessing and a source of comfort to his dear ones. - Posted by: Barry Posner (Medical School Classmate) on: Mar 08, 2021

  • I was away when the notice came of Dr. Beaszey's passing. So I did not know until late March. My sons and I have a Norman Rockwell (reprint) of a Dr. & little girl and her doll. When we moved to Toronto (1980's) my son found it and said we needed it because it was just like Dr. Beazley and him. We have now got a new frame (no more plastic) and added "In loving memory" with Gary's information on front and obid on back. We were all deeply saddened by his passing. We send our sincere condolences to you and your family. Abe, Janice, Darby & Dillon Spicer. - Posted by: Janice Spicer (Patient) on: Jun 23, 2020

  • So sorry to hear of your loss, Liz and family. Gary was a groundbreaker in his field and that legacy will continue. I have fond memories of hikes/paddles to Lake Florence and the good times we shared there. Gary will be greatly missed as will his wit and wisdom through the years. Just back from Victoria so missed the celebration of life. - Posted by: Gerri Thorsteinson (Friend) on: Mar 04, 2020

  • My deep sympathy on the passing of a fine man, whom I met through the family medicine residency program while at St Boniface Hospital, 1985-87. He was a marvelous role model of all the strengths of the profession. And, in a fashion , he changed my life: He encouraged me to undertake a one year locum position upon graduation, during which I met my husband of thirty years. - Posted by: Karen Bergner Juce (student and colleague) on: Feb 26, 2020

  • Dear Liz, I am so sorry for your loss. I regret we haven’t seen each other in many years. Gary always took time to visit my mom, Aunty Ruby, when she was in the hospital. His visits made her so happy. He will be missed. Sending love and hugs. - Posted by: Kerri Lynne Seadon Sexton (Cousin) on: Feb 24, 2020

  • Dear Liz and family, We are saddened to hear of Gary’s passing and have been thinking of him a lot since we heard the news. He was quite a man and definitely a force of nature at Winnitoba. I fondly remember our chats and reminiscences on the dock, as two of the remaining old men down at the lake. We are away and unable to attend Gary’s celebration of life, but our hearts and thoughts are with you. Bob Sutherland and Judy Jackson - Posted by: Bob Sutherland (Friend) on: Feb 23, 2020

  • Thank you Gary for your wisdom and wit. You were part of teaching me the art and science of being a physician. Stewart Wakeman (family medicine 1981-1983) - Posted by: Stewart Wakeman (Student and colleague) on: Feb 22, 2020

  • Our professional association (medical practice as GP's) dates back to the 1960s when our expectant mothers and other patients were still admitted to the old Concordia. Lots of water has flowed under the many bridges since those days . I have fond memories of your contribution to the training of our many future general practitioners as well as the upgrading of those already in practice like myself will forever be remembered. Rest In Peace DocSam. - Posted by: Dr. Sam Hrushovetz (medical colleague) on: Feb 22, 2020

  • My deepest condolences to the family, Gary was my primary doctor for roughly a decade and in that time we developed a great friendship that stemmed from our mutual love of the great outdoors and nature. I have many fond memories chatting about his treks from the train to his cabin and his famed sauna, He was truly a great man and with his no nonsense and often humorous bedside manner left a lasting impression on me. He will be truly missed. - Posted by: David M. (Patient and friend) on: Feb 21, 2020

  • Hi Liz. So very sorry for your loss. Gary was a wonderful man and I will never forget him. He delivered my oldest son Jason and then in 1972 he delivered my twins. His first set of twins and he was so proud. You and Gary took my daughter Michelle home twice for me so I could get some rest as she cried and cried and I had a difficult time calming her. You and Gary were so kind to do this. Well that little girl grew up and is now a supervisor of Social work along with her husband in Portage la Prairie. She has 1 son in the faculty of education. I often thought of contacting you both through the years but you know how we always think we’ll do that soon someday, but that day never comes and then it’s too late. Again I am so sorry for your loss. I know what a fine man he was and how much he loved his family. My husband Bill Harris died in 1986 of leukaemia. I don’t know if Gary knew this. He did know of my sister Jackie’s passing in 1980 as he attended her funeral. She had been murdered, but was a patient of Gary’s as well. Again my condolences. • Dear Liz and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I have known your husband and father for 58 years. He was so understanding and compassionate with me and my children as I went through some trying times. I just thought about him the other day just hoping he was well and still enjoying his retirement. My heart goes out to you all as he was a caring father husband and doctor. Please accept my sincerest condolences and May your memories be held close in your hearts!! - Posted by: Carol Chudley (Past patient) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Dear Liz, Bruce, Gordon and Mary..It is with heartfelt sadness in hearing the news of Dr. Beazley's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all during this most difficult time. He was a remarkable man and one of the finest I have ever known; he will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Darren McNally (Friend of the Family) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Thankful for the many years that I was able to learn from Dr. Beazley - truly a trailblazer for rural family medicine program - Parkland Unit. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Michelle Jubenvill (Colleague) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Gary was my mentor as head of the Family Practice residency in 1973-4 for just one year , but I learned more about integrity, humility and patient centred care in that year than in the four previous medical school years . He taught by example and by gently finding our strengths and weaknesses; with Drs Renouf , Hart and Murphy , he brought out the essence of being a doctor from the complex web of knowledge imbedded in Medical School. He lived by the precept that “what you do for the least among us, you do for Me” and was a gift to all his patients and residents. - Posted by: Dr Ron Witzke (Resident 1974) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Dear Liz and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I spent many Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners with your family and always found Gary to be welcoming, funny and quite the debater. I know how much you will all miss him. Erika - Posted by: Erika Kreis (Friend of family) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Dear Liz - I'm so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. He was always one of my favourite people when I worked with him in family medicine and always considered him a good friend as much as a colleague. My condolences to you and your family. I share this passage with you... "Life will not go on in the same way without him. If it were the same, we could conclude his life meant nothing, made no contribution. The fact that he left behind a place that cannot be filled is a high tribute to the uniqueness of his soul." Molly Fumia - Safe Passage. - Posted by: Lynda Corby (Friend and colleague) on: Feb 20, 2020
