LYNN IRIS BUCHANAN RANKIN

It is with deep sorrow we announce the loss of Lynn Rankin, our beloved mother, sister, aunt and friend.
Born in Winnipeg, Lynn grew up in Wolseley, Neepawa and Brandon. As a young woman, she travelled the world as a flight attendant with Canadian Pacific Airlines before settling in Winnipeg to raise her two sons. As full-time parent with a creative and analytical mind, Lynn completed a degree in political science (BA 1986) at the University of Winnipeg, before pursuing graduate studies in landscape architecture, working on multiple public and private landscape designs in Winnipeg, including the historic Steinkopf Gardens. She was an extremely devoted parent, an idealistic spirit, a loving soul who was committed to a compassionate vision of justice. Lynn was also an engaged cultural citizen, a long-time patron of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Camerata Nova, and a dedicated advocate for the Assiniboine Park Conservatory. Her home garden was a site of deep personal expression and her family will cherish her memory wherever gardens flourish. She will be very deeply missed.
Lynn is survived her two sons, Scott Rankin (Toni Wu) and Matthew, sister Susan, brother Dan (Constance Macrae), sister-in-law Loreen, many nieces and nephews, and one very sweet cat, Finch. She was predeceased by former husband Laird Rankin, brother Scott, sister Jane, and her parents, Florence and Bill Buchanan.
At Lynn's request, there will be a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lynn's name to the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

  • I met Lynn when she came to work at Gulf Oil Canada just after she and Laird were married. She was such a wonderful young woman and was loved by all who worked with her. In 1974 I left to work at the Grace Hospital and then had the wonderful opportunity of working with her Mom, Florence. for several years. Life has a way of creating intersecting paths. I send condolences to all who loved Lynn. - Posted by: Dianna Brown (friend/former co-worker) on: Mar 14, 2020

  • All my thoughts are with Matthew and the family. I only had the chance to meet Lynn on a brief occasion, but her presence and natural grace remain vivid in my memory. Lots of love. Annie - Posted by: Annie StPierre (amie) on: Mar 14, 2020
