DECHKA: On July 20, 2011, Wayne Michael Dechka passed away after a courageous fight with cancer. Wayne was born to Mildred and Michael Dechka on October 28, 1950, in Brandon, Manitoba. During the time of his passing, Wayne was employed with Mayfair Optical Clinic in Victoria, B.C. The staff, management and clients at Mayfair Optical easily became a second family to Wayne. Their kindness and support during his fight with cancer was above and beyond all expectations. Wayne will be dearly missed by his mother Mildred Dechka, sisters Judy Cumming, Shirley (Darrell) Hensrud of Chilliwack, B.C., and nieces Carrie (Rick) Basaraba, Corinne (Brent) Willms. Also great nieces Christi and Rylie Basaraba, Courtney Willms and great nephew Brant Willms. Wayne was predeceased by his father Michael and brothers Murray and as a baby, Barry. A private service will follow at a later date.

I knew Wayne very well. I was married to Dr Don Johnson until his death in 2002. Wayne was a wonderful friend who spent many a night in our home with his faithful old dog! We loved when Wayne visited and had many grand discussions involving Ophthalmology. Two years after Don died I moved to Chilliwack, I wished I had known Wayne’s sister lived there. I married my present husband Mike Keyes in 2007 and we continued to live in Chilliwack area until 2023 when we moved to Lethbridge Alberta where we live presently. I was thinking about Wayne the other day and recounting a story of when he did a clinic in the Yukon with us one year and we made perogies from scratch! He was a fantastic cook who really knew his way around the world of culinary as well as Ophthalmology. This made me decide to check up on him. I am so sad I missed his passing but comfort myself thinking about him having some amazing get togethers with Dr J in heaven. You touched lives Wayne and will always be missed.
