BARTEAUX: Philip Barteaux was born on the farm on May 14, 1925 to May and Orlando Barteaux. Phil was predeceased by his parents, step-mother, Clara, cherished wife of 66 years, Beverley, his son Dale, his three brothers, George, Jack and Bruce, and by his son-in-law, Morris. He grew up in Wattsview and remembered fondly the scrapes and trouble he and his brothers and their friends made. In 1951, he married Beverley Shier, and they farmed together, raising seven children, Linda (Morris Butcher), Wayne (Debra Admussen), Connie (Glenn LaMarche), Karen (Dwayne Clark), Glen (Dana Hutchings), Dale (Evelyn Bertram), and Janette (Sean OBrien). Phil is survived by six children, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Phil farmed all his life and had a huge connection to his land. He took a keen interest in it even in the fall of 2018, driving out in his beloved Highlander to check the crops and the progress of the harvest. He farmed with George and Jack for many years and experienced decades of changes, from the four-horse team pulling the plow to the massive equipment used today. He never stopped learning, was curious and inventive, and loved his farmers arithmetic. His latest hobby was supervising the oil wells in Wattsview and looking for his first gusher. He was a keen volunteer, first at the skating rink, the Pool Elevator, community projects, and finally the Drop In Centre. He had hundreds of stories at the ready and a long and colorful memory. His favorite things were Beverleys cooking, potatoes with gravy, sour cream raisin pie, and his garden. His eyes would light up when friends and neighbors dropped over and especially if anyone was keen to play cards with him. He lived his values everyday; neighboring, duty, and minimalism. Phil was much loved and honored in the community to which he gave his whole life. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Birtle United Church with interment to follow in the Birtle Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Birtle Drop In Centre.
