LESLIE JOHN COUGHLIN
January 31, 1949 - October 16, 2020
Les leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 40 years, Shannon (Iwanoczko) Coughlin; his son, Blaine Coughlin, and daughter-in-law Vanessa Nowostawski; his mother, Verna (Brown) Coughlin; sister, Cheryl Pykerman, husband Lorne, and family; sister, Donna Waterson, husband Wilf, and family; brother, Craig Coughlin, wife Debbie, and family; sister, Leanne Ingo, husband Brian, and family; brother, Warren Coughlin, wife Sarah, and family; mother-in-law, Marion (Kazuk) Iwanoczko; brother-in-law, Glen Iwanoczko, wife Sue, and family. He will be missed by his many Coughlin and Brown family relatives, as well as the Iwanoczko and Kazuk families. He was predeceased by his father and fishing buddy, Leslie John Coughlin Sr; his friend and father-in-law, Karl Iwanoczko; as well as Coughlin and Brown grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Les was born and lived most of his life in Kenora, Ontario, working first for CP, and then "the mill" for several years. After moving to Winnipeg to start his family, he worked for many years at Labatt's, finishing his working career at Cangene. He was proud to have earned his machinist and millwright certifications, and took great pride in his professional work. He was always creating and building something metal in his garage, especially features for Shannon's garden or improved ways to grow his tomatoes.
Les' greatest love was his family, especially his son, of whom he was so proud. He enjoyed chatting with his siblings via Skype on almost a daily basis, and loved activities, adventures, and visits with them. He adored his many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Les loved holding babies, even tiny "fresh" ones. His next greatest love was Lake of the Woods, which he considered heaven on earth, enjoying fishing, guiding, boating, going to friends' camps, and spending time with his father on the houseboat. He knew the lake like the back of his hand, was always in search of secret fishing spots, some so secret even the fish didn't know. In his younger years, he was a professional diver, exploring the underwater treasures, or working on many projects around the lake.
What we will miss most of all is Les' booming voice, big personality, and laugh. Whether it was cheering at Blaine's and family sporting events, or calling out to friends and neighbours from his deck as they passed by, or teasing all the "gals", you always knew he was there. He had a huge repertoire of witty rejoinders and used them often. As he climbs the Stairway to Heaven (a favourite song now fitting), we will very much miss hearing them, especially "keep it between the ditches" when we were setting off in a car. Les' gentle side was his love of all animals, big and small, especially his wee Scottie dog, Agatha, who is missing him very much.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held next summer in sight of his beloved LOTW.
Contributions may be made in Les' memory to the Diabetes Canada.

Dear Shannon, Blaine and Family. What a shock to hear of Les' passing. I remember the picture of Les holding Erin when she was born. She fit into the palm of his hand. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time. Merle and Gary Fund - Posted by: Merle Fund (Friend) on: Oct 27, 2020

I am so saddened by the loss of such a dear friend of over 40 years. My heart is with Shannon, Blaine and all of the wonderful family members, many of whom we came to know on visits to Lake of the Woods. When I think of Les, my thoughts fill with the memories of the liberal doses he always dished out, of laughter, fun and endless teasing. His good humour was just as capable of taking the jokes as he was at handing them out but his shoulder would always be there for a friend in sad times as well. He will be so greatly missed by so many. All my love - Posted by: Joan Mackay (Friend) on: Oct 26, 2020

Deepest condolences to Shannon, Blaine, family and friends. I didn’t know Les well but I do remember a time many, many years ago at the Coughlan kitchen table with Les, Shannon and a young Blaine. It was a dinner with much laughter. I knew then what a huge presence Les was in the life of his family and his friends. We are thinking of Shannon & Blaine and the family and sending strength and love and we hope to be there in Winnipeg next summer to remember Les at LOFW. - Posted by: sheila Bryan (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2020

My heart goes out to you Shannon and Blaine and the Coughlin family at this difficult time. Les was a unique and personable person. I always enjoyed talking to Les on the phone when he would call the office asking for the Barracuda and asking whether I was working hard or hardly working! And teasing me at no end whether I was giving those farm boys a hard time! Our conversations would always end with laughs and jokes. Les, you will be missed by all those who knew you and your memory is a blessing to all of us. Enjoy fishing in heaven. Even Jesus had a fishing story! - Posted by: Daria Gawronsky (Friend) on: Oct 24, 2020

Lester / Chester Firstly, Marilyn and my most sincere condolences to Shannon / Blaine, family and friends. I knew Les for many years, we fished together years ago, golfed together and hung out from time to time. When I would drop in on Les from time to time, open the back door and yell down the stairs " Les are you there" he would reply "this is me is that you". Before I would get to the bottom step he would ask me what I broke. I'm not sure if I'm more ticked at Les for leaving us so suddenly or feeling sorry for myself because my after hour hardware and repair shop is now closed for good. If I broke something, Les either had a replacement part, could make a replacement part or fix what I had broken. Les also golfed Left handed as I do, so, when he still golfed we were always either swooping, trading or buying each others clubs (mostly me) as Les would buy a new club, say it didn't work and of course then I would have to try it. In our chit-chats watching old movies from his favorite chair, Les would often brag how proud he was of Blaine and his accomplishments. And on my departure from the house Les would always say : "Say Hi to the Warden or Boss". Les will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
