LORRAINE MARIA GEORGETTE POERSCH (DE WANDEL)
June 15, 1935 November 6, 2020
Lorraine leaves behind Ken, her loving husband of 62 years, four daughters, Catherine Drennan (Kevin), Christine Poersch-Thomas, Jacqueline Poersch-Burns (Ken) and Colleen Normand (Alain), as well as nine loving grandchildren, Chantalle Normand/Marco, Jason Thomas/Eloisa, Breanna Drennan-Bilyk/Brennen, Kyla Drennan, Kent Burns, Joel Normand/Chelsea, Joshua Normand/Stacy, Taylor Johnson/Curtis and Kleighton Burns/Carling, and the apples of her eyes, her great-grandchildren, Kayden, Mallory and Daphne.
Lorraine also leaves behind her brothers, Herman (June), and George (Elayne), her brother-in-law, Albert Van Walleghem, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Alphonse and Marguerite, her in-laws, Victor and Erna Poersch, her brother-in-law, Brian Poersch, her son-in-law, Roland Thomas, her sister, Lillian Van Walleghem and her brother, Omer.
Lorraine was born in St. Boniface and lived there her entire life. Mom went to work at Sanford Evans as a switch board operator. In 1957, Mom met the love of her life, Ken, in Brunkild, MB. Mom and Dad were married on May 3, 1958, at Holy Cross Church. Upon the arrival of her four daughters, Mom became a homemaker. As a family, we were blessed with a mother who loved to cook and made fantastic meals and was a seamstress extraordinaire.
Mom was organized and had great ideas when it came to home renovations. There were many times that Dad would come home from work and the drywall would be gone from one of the walls.
Mom loved to travel which took her to the West Coast and to Europe with her sister and brothers. Mom loved to play cards, do crosswords and was a very "avid" bingo player. At the age of 75 she even mastered the computer.
After Mom and Dad became empty nesters, they became grandparents. Mom was there whenever we needed her. Her grandchildren were thrilled to go for lunches and were spoiled rotten by her. Then a job popped up at a local gym. They were looking for someone to work in the daycare and Mom got the job. Mom was so happy and proud to look after the children and the children loved her in return.
Mom was in her own home until 2018, and at that time a move was made to RHC. At RHC, Mom enjoyed the recreational activities of 2E and 2W. Mom loved bingo, old time movies (the nurses were amazed at how many actors she knew) and was even in a hockey pool, but the highlight of Mom's stay were her bike rides. Thanks to Chris who pedaled for Mom and drove her all over and missed all of the potholes (as Mom told us) and more importantly to BDI for ice cream.
Words cannot express our sincere gratitude for everything that was done for Mom at RHC. As the doctors, nurses and health care aides said "your Mom was sassy, witty and wasn't afraid to tell us off" but she was loved by the staff and will be missed.
A very special thanks to Dr. Blum who looked after Mom. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Mom thought the world of you. Thank you to Mark, Mom's social worker who was our conduit for the last two years and to the dedicated nurses and health care aides who entered Mom's life and made her as comfortable as possible.
If you so desire, donations can be made in Mom's memory to: "2 East Recreation Program" at RHC. These funds will be directed to Mom's favourite pastimes. Donate online at rhc.mb.ca and choose Respiratory 2E or mail to RHC, 1 Morley Avenue, R3L 2P4 specifying Respiratory 2E in memory of Mom.
Mom, there are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts.

I will always remember the warm welcomes we would receive whenever we were invited to Ken and Lorraine's house. To this day, whenever I hear an accordion playing I always smile and think back on those family BBQs at Lorraine and Ken's backyard, all the children playing and laughing, the family and friends, the music, and all the food...oh my goodness the food! Mike and I hope that in time the many wonderful memories you have will eventually bring a smile and ease the tears you now have. Hugs and love always, and our deepest condolences.
