MARY SOPHIE (TESSIE) BOROWIEC
(nee SLUSARCZYK)
February 5, 1933 - December 9, 2020
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Carol (Lyall), son Dave (Joanne), grandsons, Jason (Megan) and Scott (Kate), great-granddaughters, Brooke and Peyton, sister Josie (Eddie) Rosolowich, nieces, nephews and many friends. Tessie was predeceased by her husband John Borowiec, John's only sister and brother-in-law Jean and Vance Kuzia, son-in-law Chester Tabor, her parents, Stanley and Victoria Slusarczyk, her sisters, Millie Karan and Joan Tyo, and her brothers, Ted and Henry Slusarczyk.
Tessie grew up in Vassar, Manitoba. At 15 she decided it was time to move to Winnipeg where she lived with her eldest sister, Millie. Mom started working as a waitress in a small downtown cafe. During 1949, a young Polish man, by the name of John Borowiec, sat down at one of her tables and caught her eye. They had an instant connection. Tessie and John were married on August 26, 1950 and were married close to 62 years before John passed away in August 2012.
Tessie's waitress/people skills landed her a job with Rae & Jerry's Steak House. She very much enjoyed working, making many beautiful friendships along the way. Rae & Jerry's was blessed with 50 years of Mom's service until she retired in 2002 at age 69.
Tessie and John lived in a couple of homes prior to purchasing some land in St. Vital, close to what then was called the Winnipeg Canoe Club. Through their brother-in-law, Vance Kuzia, who owned his own construction firm, built their home. This home was Mom's 'castle'. She took pride in her home, as well as her yard. Mom had a passion for gardening. Her yard was pristine with the perfect annuals/perennials, and, the more flowers she had, the happier she was. She, along with the neighbours, won awards for their magnificent yards.
Mom's children/family were her greatest joy; they were her everything. She was so very proud to be a mother and later on, a grandmother and great-grandmother. Without a blink of an eye, she was there any time any of her kids needed her. Grandma was available to drop the kids off at school or pick them up, to babysit, attend the kids' extra-curricular activities, or just to give hugs / kisses. She couldn't get enough of her grandsons and great-granddaughters....her heart was full of love for them! Cooking / baking was another one of Mom's passions. As the family grew, so did the amount of perogies, cabbage rolls, pickles and baked goodies. She made awesome apple pies!
Tessie and Josie had a very unique sister relationship. They were very close as young girls in Vassar, and when Tessie left Vassar to move to Winnipeg, Josie was devastated. Josie eventually moved to Winnipeg and lived with Tessie and John. As years went on, Tessie and Josie developed a special sisterhood and couldn't go a day without speaking to each; sometimes several times a day.
Tessie and her very good friend, Margaret (Carl) Pfaff, loved to attend auctions, and worked together on many house estate sales. They often traded gardening ideas and could be seen on numerous occasions in one garden or the other.
Mom had been dealing with dementia for the last seven years and was able to stay in her own home until March 2019. It was then that she moved to Holy Family Home. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the individuals who cared for Mom during her time there.
Tessie touched many peoples' lives, and was loved by all who knew her. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends, and forever remembered!
Due to current circumstances, a private family service was held with interment following at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba or Festival of Lights - Lubov SSMI Foundation.

Mom I miss you so much already. You gave me so much to live by, your morals, how to think of others and give of yourself, always forgive, and love. Mom you were the best Mother a daughter could have but you were also my friend. I hold so many memories in my heart of our times together, the many phone calls and very long chats we had. I'm especially grateful that I was able to spend everyday with you last summer. It breaks my heart that due to covid I couldn't be with you. I believe your with me now in my memories and heart. Your with Dad now, and God. Love your Daughter forever xxoo - Posted by: Carol Tabor (Daughter ) on: Dec 18, 2020

I have not seen Tessie for years, the last time i saw her was when i was the home care worker for her mom, in st. vital, i will always remember her kindness, and i admired how she looked after her mom at home, until the end... she was always very kind to me, and we had some great talks while i was helping her or she was helping me caring for her mom, always wanted to stop by to say hi to her, after her mom passed, but never found the time, may she rest in peace now, and bless her for all of her kindness RIP Tessie, you were like a grandma to me ... - Posted by: Tammy Solleveld (friend) on: Dec 16, 2020
