ANNE ABRAMS
Our mother, Anne Abrams (nee Driedger) passed away December 21, 2020 in the Altona Memorial Hospital.
Mom came into this world September 17, 1919, in the midst of a global pandemic and, ironically, left this world over a century later in the midst of another global pandemic. Fortunately, sandwiched between these major events, she shaped a normal and productive life.
Mom grew up on the family farm in Amsterdam, MB. After school, Mom met and married our Dad, Henry E Abrams on November 24, 1940. They set up house in Altona and raised three daughters and one son.
Mom was always the quiet yet strong one in the family. When Dad died in 1995, at the age 78, Mom was now thrust into the position of the of family matriarch. She assumed the mantle her mother had so ably worn. She exhibited a heightened awareness of her known but muted characteristics of humour, self confidence, self direction, spunk and interest in engaging with the world around her.
Mom started driving late in life and enjoyed the independence it gave her. When Mom finally gave up the car there was a collective sigh of relief from anyone who had ever ridden with her.
Mom loved seeing the changing countryside in the different seasons and exploring new areas. Her daughter, Verna and husband Pete, provided untold hours of entertainment. Son, Roy came home as often as possible and enjoyed travelling Southern MB with Mom. They were trips into the local and family history as told to him by someone who lived it. Priceless.
Mom and Dad enjoyed many trips across Canada and to Mexico. Mom continued to travel after Dad passed. One of her most favourite trips was to Churchill by train with her sister.
Mom and Dad enjoyed being involved in the community and Mom continued to volunteer until it became too difficult.
Mom is survived by her children, Verna (Pete), Roy (Gladys), Jolene (Pete), and Debbie (Lorne); six grandchildren - Barb, Darryl, Kendall, Leah, Crystal, and Karla and their partners. She also had numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren as well as her sister-in-law Tina Poulin. Also many nieces and nephews.
Mom was laid to rest on December 23, 2020 beside her husband, Henry E. Abrams, at the Hochstadt Cemetary surrounded by immediate family.
Our gratitude to Mom's doctor, home care staff, the staff at The Apartments and the nursing staff at the hospital. The care and love you extended to our mother is appreciated.
Thank you to Trevor and his staff at Wiebe's Funeral Home.
