MARGARET PURDY
1916 - 2021
She is survived by her daughter Lee Noel, and grandchildren: Carla (Stuart) Parker, Michael (Karren) Noel, Lizanne Fernhout, and Deborah Noel. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Dylan, Maya, and Hayley Parker; Kennedy (Victor) Arevalo, Madeline, Jacqueline, Camille, Andy, Gabrielle, and Thomas Noel; and Nicholas (Ella) and Jake Fernhout; as well as great-great-grandson Asher Arevalo.
As a centenarian, Margaret was fond of saying that she was "a bit of an antique" and outlived many family and friends. She was predeceased by her daughter Barbara Zaruk, son-in-law Gordon Noel; and siblings, James Purdy, Wilhelmina Patterson, Clarence Purdy, Pearl Nancollas, and Harold Purdy.
Margaret lived in several cities across Canada including Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Lethbridge but always returned to Winnipeg which to her was home. Of most importance to Margaret, were her family members, not only her children and grandchildren but also her siblings and their families. Many of these relatives were recipients of her entertaining typewritten letters. Her life's work was genealogy research and she compiled a treasure trove of historical documents from these efforts.
Margaret was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a special gift of reaching out to others, especially the less fortunate. She brought joy to many people and will be dearly missed by family members and friends across Canada and the United States.
A special thank you to the exceptional caregiving staff at Golden Acres Lodge and Coaldale Health Centre.
A graveside service will be held at Brookside Cemetery.

Some genealogists are attracted to the subject for its dry tree structures, like the Book of Genesis: begat, begat, begat. Margaret loved reading biographies. She was fascinated by people, their times, their surroundings, how they must have struggled and coped and felt. Excerpts from Margaret's letters: "Years ago I made a deal with the children and grandchildren. They could get presents on their birthdays until they reached age 20. Or they could go anyplace in the world and I would take them. They all picked the OR option. We've been all across Canada; the World's Fair; Washington, D.C.; Honolulu; England; Ireland; France; Salt Lake City; we've gone by plane, train, bus, boat, been on the Queen Mary; plus other places." "Come April, I'll be another great-grandmother when Camille Margaret Noel arrives in Carson City, Nevada. Carl was 3 months old when he came to live with us the first Monday in February, 1936. What a Monday that was." "Right now I have itchy feet. I feel like going somewhere, who knows where. Perhaps to Edmonton to see Lee. Maybe to Vancouver Island." "Here is a newspaper clipping from the Times of London, dated April 7th, 1896. I found it in the Dominion Archives in Ottawa in the summer of 1975. What was I doing in Ottawa in 1975?? I didn't live in Ottawa until 1977–1981." "Trust this new year will be an upbeat adventure. For life is just that, an adventure, as one never knows the outcome." I knew Margaret for 70 years, yet I didn't know the enormity of her adventure until two days ago, when her granddaughter Lizanne told me. I am in awe of her courage. - Posted by: Robert Purdy (Margaret's nephew) on: May 02, 2021

The most captivating story teller in her sweet sing song voice. Aunt Margaret as I knew her stubbornly loved anyone with a good heart. Not afraid to care or fight for any one she felt deserved a better chance at life. I remember walking the neighbourhood with her as we distributed protest fliers in an attempt to save a Kiwanis Senior housing complex from a bulldozer. Every one in her life was special to her, evident by the handmade knit bears and needle point she custom made for close, extended and estranged family. I have nothing but the happiest memories of her and I'm sure that I will not be the last to say so as she touched so many lives with her love. God love you and keep you. - Posted by: Jerome Chouinard (Grandson of Harold Purdy) on: Apr 26, 2021

Aunt Margaret has always held a special place in my heart, leaving me with so many fond memories together in Winnipeg. She was much more than just an aunt, closer to a grandmother. I’d sleepover at her place, just me and her to cook and craft at her home, with aunt Pearl just across the street. I’ll always cherish the customized Christmas stocking she made for us... gosh, there must have been thousands of hand sewn beads! Thanks for being such a positive figure in my childhood, RIP Aunt Margaret, love Celeste - Posted by: Celeste Hnatiuk (nee Chouinard) (Great niece (granddaughter of James Purdy) ) on: Apr 26, 2021
