VERNON LLOYD PETERSON
On February 26, 2022 Dad's prayers were answered; to be reunited with the love of his life, his wife of 68 years Margaret (Hay), who passed in 2018.
Dad was born on July 14, 1928 in Prince Albert, SK, grew up in Melville, SK and at the age of 16 boarded a train to Transcona to begin his career at the Canadian National Railway in the Foundry as a Moulder Apprentice.
Dad lived in a boarding house in Transcona and across the back lane met his wife Margaret Hay.
They were married in 1950, built their home in Transcona where they resided until 2007 and then moved to Transcona Place.
They had two daughters, Betty (Doug), Barb (Kory), two grandchildren, Jennifer (Tommy) and Chris (Jessica), and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Max.
Dad loved his family and truly spent his life protecting us, guiding us, and loving us.
Mom and Dad chose a good life and lived it beautifully with kindness, generosity and with good hearts.
Dad's passions included fixing anything. "There must be a way to fix this" and he'd always figure it out.
During Dad's life he enjoyed helping others, whether it be to lend a helping hand or to lend a listening ear.
Dad was a Custodian at the Pirates Community Club, a Custodian at Transcona Memorial United Church, a Scout Leader at the Maple Leaf Community Club, and a Baseball Coach.
Dad enjoyed curling, watching sports, fun get togethers and dancing Saturday nights with their many lifelong friends.
Dad was a storyteller, especially railway stories, which he told up to his last breath. He was a railroader and he loved his 41 year career at CNR, the CN5060 engine, and all the many friends he met during his career.
In friends' words, Vern was a character, one of the good ones and always wore the best cologne. He was a strong man whose star will shine bright.
Dad will be so sadly missed by his family, his sisters-in-law, Joan, Shirley, Gloria, cousin Myrna, many nieces and nephews, and the many friends who were just like family.
Special thanks to Home Care, Health Sciences Centre Emergency, Concordia Hospital Ward N3E for your caring and kind hearts. You were amazing and appreciated.
Special thanks to Elmer who had such an incredible bond with Dad. We are forever grateful for the love and life you brought into Dad's mornings.
Dr. Caners, you know how special you were to Mom and Dad. Your kindness, love, and unparalleled doctoring that we will forever be thankful and grateful for.
Love You Forever Mom and Dad
We do not have to rely on memories
to recapture the spirit of those
we have loved and lost.
They live within our souls
in some perfect sanctuary
which even death cannot destroy.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Rossbrook House, 658 Ross Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 0M1.

Marg and Vern lived across the back lane from Iris and Keith. I was too young to really know them until I was much older. Whenever I saw them out and about I lit up they were always so welcoming, open, and loving. When they moved into Transcona place mom was determined to give them a tomato plant (a big one). I delivered in into their suite which made a lifelong impression on me. I could feel the peace and love of their home and admired all of the items they surrounded themselves with! I am very grateful to have had a few visits with him in his later years. Sending my sincerest condolences to the family! May all of your memories keep them close! Vern was my boss at Transcona Shops. Honest hardworking man that expected the best out of everyone. I can still see him marching into #1 area to check on progress with a flashlight in one hand and other hand grabbing the collar on his jacket. Many memories. Rest In Peace. Vern taught me so much as a young Mechanic @ the shops. - Posted by: Brad Weitzel (Subordinate ) on: May 03, 2022

Vern was a very nice man. Together with my Dad, myself, Vern & Vern's homemade plywood shovel we keep the back lane down to the pavement all winter, from Vern's house, to Madeline. I can remember I needed help doing my timing on my 1976 motorcycle. My dad didn't know how to do it, and I was in a rush to put it back together. I rushed over to Vern's and told him my dad was to busy to help me. Poor Vern he was in the middle of painting the kitchen ceiling. It wasn't too much to ask Vern for help at any time. It was only moments after Vern was in the back lane showing me how to set points on my motorcycle. He was a extra father to the children of Transcona. - Posted by: Russ Popp (Neighbor & CNR employee ) on: Mar 05, 2022
