MICHAEL SEAN THOMPSON
July 15, 1968 - February 24, 2022
Michael Thompson passed away suddenly on February 24 in Winnipeg.
Left to mourn Michael are his life partner, Lilia Duque, and his much beloved children, Liam, Ireland, and Lucas; walks for Toban and Dexter will never be the same. He will be forever missed by his mother Bonnie Thompson of Pender Island, as well as his siblings, Kara (Dustin), Patrick, Kelly, and Colleen; mother-in-law Lola; as well as the many extended family members, friends and neighbours, each of whom have experienced Michael's unique generosity and thoughtfulness. Micheal was predeceased by his father Blair in 2017.
Michael was born and raised in Winnipeg, and attended River Heights, Kelvin High School, and the University of Manitoba. He spent many years working for Canada Post Corporation, culminating in an early-retirement that allowed him to take-on his most special role: parent, mentor, and at-home teacher to his children; curator of his beautiful home; and ally to anyone in need. Not a birthday went unnoticed, a conversation unfinished, or a sidewalk unshovelled on Michael's watch. He enjoyed being of service almost as much as he enjoyed the Buffalo Bills. He left us before the game was won; before the story was over; and before we were ready to let him go.
Special thanks to the paramedics and caring staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, along with friends, who have helped Michael's family during this difficult journey.
A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date.

My heart goes out to you and your kids Lil. Mike was probably the the most honourable person I’ve ever known. I considered him one of my best friends. He treated everyone like they were important to him, and he was important to me . I had lots of laughs and some hard times with him, and he was there though it all. I’m proud to call him my friend. I will miss him. RIP Mike, and take care Lil. If there’s anything I can do for you, please call. Your Friend Rod. - Posted by: Rod (More than a friend) on: May 29, 2022

I just found out and I'm speechless. Michael was a true friend, he was a very caring, devoted person, and if you're having a bad day, he'd always be there for you... always. My condolences goes out to his life partner Lilia, his children, family and friends. You'll always be in our hearts, my friend. - Posted by: Hal Pehlich (close friend) on: May 21, 2022

I knew Mike over years growing up in River Heights and since lost touch. I heard of his passing from my brother and it broke my heart once again. Mike's friend from those days Scott passed in December. Mike to me was a very stand up guy. Him and Glen Powers went to court on my behalf and charges against me were dropped because of their testimony. Forever grateful for people that stand up. He also lived in my Mom's apartment Block for a time. Always liked him. - Posted by: Chris Dawson (We Knew one another as teens) on: Apr 04, 2022

Mike was my best friend from 6 to 12 years old. We spent all of our free time together and I could always rely on his easygoing companionship. I only later realized how much his friendship helped me through the many stresses of adolescence, some of which were hard for me to carry. I can see from the comments above that his kind heart has affected many others the same way. Cheers, Mike. I was lucky to have you as a friend. - Posted by: Scott Harland (Childhood friend) on: Mar 24, 2022

As I write this, I am still in disbelief. Honestly, Mike was like a brother to me. I was friends with Mike since his Stradbrook Ave. years. I'll remember him as a massive music fan and a rabid Buffalo Bills/Winnipeg Jets fan. He was so proud of his family--my deepest condolences go out to Lil', Liam, Ireland, & Lucas and all extended family and friends. Here's to all of our great memories of him, living forever. Love ya, man. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Darcy S. (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2022

Our deepest sympathies to Lilia and families. I met both Michael and Lilia through my job in PCR at Can Post. As well as Dragon Boats. I had many conversations with both of you and I remember how over the moon Michael was when you were expecting your first born. Our thoughts are with you. Mike and I grew up together during our late teens and early 20s. We worked at Kornerstop foods, ran in the same circle of friends and truly had some great years hanging out. The life of the party, the guy who could make you laugh until your belly hurt and a solid, loyal friend. That's what I remember the most, a guy who laughed loud and lived large. I feel blessed having Big Red as a friend all those years ago. I'm so sorry he didn't get to stay here longer and send my condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Nadia Moharib (old friend) on: Mar 07, 2022

I was very sorry to read Michael has passed away. I was a teacher at the school where his dad, Blair, was my principal. My task when the Thompson's made their move out west to Pender was to take care of the little blue car for Michael, who would eventually come to pick it up! I had driving privileges and that sold me on compact cars ever since. I only met Michael that one time when the little blue car left. I know there is so much sadness in his family and my condolences go to his life partner Lilia, his children and Bonnie and family. The memories of Michael will surround you with his love forever.
