A family owned smaller dairy farm was gradually building in size due to the hard work of Carl and Mary Johanson. Always searching for ways to expand operations, they somehow met Howard Smith, some 100 miles away. Almost instantly, a bond was created between the families, as they "stuck" together through the use of the Johanson's fields, and the Smith's honey making skill. I remember many times driving our old tractor and bailer across where the bees flew to the river, always very aware of what a swarm of bees could do to me. What I also was very aware of was how good that fresh honey tasted with the free peanut butter we also had secured somehow. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches everyday all my school years, thanks to Howard Smith and family. Thank you, Howard, for my school meals for life, and the many friends we made for life, and for the lifetime of loving honey! - Posted by: Einar Johanson, Carl and Mary Johanson Arborgp (Family friends) on: Aug 31, 2025

So sorry for the loss. I have lived in Alberta for the last 30 years. The Smith family was a huge part of my childhood in Manitoba. Picking clover in the alfalfa fields and taking it all in during honey extraction. Deanne was my best buddy growing up. Please share my contact info with her. Her Dad eventually moved off the farm and bought the Eckhardt house in Dugald…. The one my dad built and the one Deanne and I had many great memories. Very sad to hear this about Howard. Condolences to the family. We will miss seeing Mr. Smith walking by, curling broom in hand, always with a smile and a wave. He was a pillar of the community and his presence will be sorely missed! Kurt & Suzanne Toews - Posted by: Suzanne Toews (Neighbor ) on: Apr 01, 2022
