DAVID RICHARD NAYLOR COOKE
On Monday, March 28, 2022, after a brief illness, David was called home.
He leaves to mourn his sisters, Audrey Belyea and Phylis Thomson, his beloved wife of 48 years, Ann, daughters, Allison and Jennifer and granddaughters, Taicha and Gabrielle.
David was born on January 5, 1940 and developed a love for music at an early age. His childhood was filled with choral music and he was a choir boy from the time he could read. At St. James Collegiate, he was involved in Glee Club, where he met Ann. After completing his Junior Matric, David entered St. John's College where he studied Sciences. Following his first year, David changed career paths and discovered his incredible talent for woodworking and all things electronic. Most of David's working life was spent at NorTel and he was the family go-to man for wiring issues.
In 1973, David married the love of his life and he and Ann embarked on a journey that neither of them could have ever imagined. They bought 20 acres of property on Hillside Road and had horses, stray dogs and abandoned cats join their family. Discussions of weather, hay crops and animal health soon became common dinner time conversations. With the help of Ann's father, David built the family home, barn, garages, hay shed and outbuildings.
Although his work sent him out of town, David made the most of his time with family and took Allison and Jennifer on a solo camping trip to Vancouver at ages nine and six. He learned how to put barrettes in hair, pushed Cabbage Patch dolls on swings, listened to the cassette version of Disney's Robin Hood (about 10 times per day) and taught the girls Canadian history as they stopped at significant sites.
David was passionately Canadian and taught his daughters about our history, including the dark parts of Canadian history. He was committed to social justice and devoted to his church community of St. George's Cresentwood Anglican. He was an avid member of St. George's choir and in recent years sang with Resound!
A celebration of David's life will be held at St. George's Cresentwood Anglican Church on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. with Frs. Dwight Rutherford and Peter Flynn presiding.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. George's choir or to Fur Bearers - an association dedicated to the protection of Canadian fur bearing animals.

Jennifer, I just learned of your father's passing from you following Mass. By his obituary, I can see what a wonderful man and father he was to you, and how he greatly influenced your life. We may have our disagreements with our fathers but it is because of them we are here. Their presence remains with us. Prayers to you and your family at this very difficult time. God Bless. - Posted by: DAVID IMRIE (friend) on: Apr 10, 2022

Ann, Allison, Jennifer and girls we are sorry you have lost such a gentle kind man. He was such a sweet man and I recall him watching our collective brood of children with amusement at family gatherings. God Bless all of you. With love, from Connie Johnson, and the Bailey, Wilson and Franz families - Posted by: Sandra (Johnson) Frsnz (Cousin to Ann) on: Mar 31, 2022

My sincerest condolences to Ann, Allison, Jennifer, and Granddaughters. I was so sad to hear this sudden news. I grew up on Hillside Rd and became friends with Allison & Jennifer. I remember their dad David as a kind man with a gentle smile. His daughters looked up to him & it evident how much he was loved. Praying God would surround you with His love & that you would feel His presence as you grieve during this difficult time. - Posted by: Michelle Steinhilber (Neighbor) on: Mar 30, 2022

David was a neighbour of my in-laws. His Mom and Dad were my surrogate parents when I came to Canada from England in 1961. My fondest memory is of David putting Christmas lights on their very tall Pine tree, not an easy task. When I see Christmas lights on trees now, I always think of David and smile, and remember their beautifully decorated tree. Rest in peace dear David and rise in Glory. - Posted by: Mrs. Barbara Thompson Walley (Friend ) on: Mar 30, 2022

I was so saddened to read about Dave's passing. Although we were connected through his marriage to Anne; we also established a bit of a friendship back in our early high school days. I will always remember Dave as a gentle soul. God Bless You Dave. - Posted by: Ron Chatfield (Cousin to Dave's Dear Wife Anne and Early Highschool friend) on: Mar 30, 2022
