ALFONSO (ALF) CARBONI
November 24, 1935 October 17, 2022
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Alfonso (Alf) Carboni, with family by his side. Dad's zest for life came to an end after a diagnosis of cancer only one month prior.
Alf was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, father Alfredo, mother Italia and daughter-in-law Sandra. Dad's memory will be cherished by his children, Alfred (Belinda), Vincent and Theresa and is survived by his brother Jim (Ronnie), as well as nieces, nephews, relatives and good friends.
Alf was born in Winnipeg and grew up in the West End. He went to Daniel McIntyre where he excelled academically, and in sports, especially football. He dreamed of being a professional quarterback. During high school when Alf was only 15, he had to start working to support his family as his father had passed away.
Alf met the love of his life in his teenage years. "The Bristol Boy" met his "Gem" Mary while hanging out with friends at Ollie's Cafe. Many magic moments occurred with them attending canteen dances, jiving the night away.
In the 1950s Alf was a singer in a music group called The Lords which played canteens and toured Manitoba. Dad's friends and his mother nicknamed him "Fonsie".
Alf and Mary wed in 1959, having Alfred, Vincent and Theresa in the 1960s and they were proud to settle in their home in Transcona for many happy years.
Alf worked at Investors Group in 1955 and managed the new computer department until 1969. He also was an entrepreneur starting a small business with friends offering key punch card services for businesses with huge main frame computers.
In 1969 Alf took a risk and switched to a sales career with Data Business Forms. He was a natural in sales and loved meeting people, becoming a Sales Manager. He retired in 1997, but stayed active in the same industry working with his son Vince in business sales, up until a month ago.
Alf loved sports especially the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Jets. He and his brother Jim had Bomber season tickets for 30 years. He was a good curler and skipped teams at Civic Caledonia rink and at Investors Group. Watching sports without him now, will never be the same.
Dad and Mom always rented a cabin at Grand Beach in the summer during the 1960s and 1970s providing us fond memories. Even weekend trips to Grand Forks were special. They loved to travel and went to California and Hawaii many times. Dad cherished the family trip to Vegas to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Alf had the perfect balance between work, family and friends. Throughout his life he was always there to help relatives and anyone at any time. His skills as a handyman were always welcome, helping us to renovate, and we enjoyed the times together learning from his expertise.
Even though we are heartbroken, Dad's spirit and memory live in our hearts forever.
A donation can be made in Alf's memory to any organization of your choice.
Cremation has taken place. A Catholic service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.

Alf junior and family, I am terribly sorry for your loss and I sincerely hope that you will all cope as well as can be expected. It is so many decades ago that we played hockey at the old Oxford Heights Community Club behind the 100 block of McMeans Avenue East. I cannot offer any memories of your late father as the perspective of a young boy playing my first years of hockey with you in the mid to late 1960s is very limited and our lives moved on from that special time all those years ago. I do remember you playing goal for our team and I truly appreciate the very well written account of your father’s life. What an exceptional man, you are all blessed with his presence all these years. Take good care of each other at this difficult time…. - Posted by: Rob McDonald (Friend of Alf Junior From Way Back) on: Jan 12, 2023
