THEODORE (TED) BOCKSTAEL
It is with a heavy heart that the family of Theodore Alphonse Bockstael announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the age of 80 years.
Ted leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 58 years, Sharon, daughter Michelle (Greg), son Michael (Sylvia), grandchildren, Cole, Nash and Carissa; and extended grandchildren, Brendan and Talisha (Mark). Dad was loved and will be missed by his younger brother Allan (Jackie) Bockstael, and many nephews and nieces. Ted was predeceased by his parents, Gus and Mary; his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura and Ray Duguay, Martha and Tom Cassels, and nephew Jeremy Bockstael, as well as Ted and Sharon's youngest child Marnie, much too early in her life.
Dad worked for CN (Via) Railway his entire career and never let becoming visually impaired stop or slow him down. From bowling to water skiing and fishing, throwing lawn darts at the annual cottage tournament, climbing ladders or chopping wood to build a fire (much to the concern of his family). Dad loved playing cards with the Legion seniors and Pinawa group and his many friends and family. Dad more often than not came out ahead, his last crib game in the hospital was a skunking of Michelle no less. "Teddy's" favourite place was at the Bockstael family cottage at Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell. Walking the yard, sitting on the deck yelling "good morning" to those passing by, puttering in the garage, a trip across the bridge to the beach for a cool swim, happy hour's and sitting around the evening fire with friends and family have created memories that will last forever.
A Celebration of Life and Funeral Mass will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Khartum Shriners Patient Transportation Fund, Attention Dee, 1155 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9 or phone (204) 925-1430.

My condolences to Sharon and family. I will always hold my memories and time spent with Ted, Sharon and their family close to my heart…dating back to my first fishing trip at the age of 7 (1969) with Ted and my father, playing horseshoes at the cottage in Nutimik, and later in Florida and Mesa, AZ while vacationing with my parents Joan & Wally. Ted had a love for life. I can still hear my parents talking the following day after a night of playing cards with Ted and Sharon, in which Ted was usually on the win end of things. Thank you for the memories. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Jim Norquay (Family Friend ) on: Jun 05, 2023

I am sure Ted was the most popular and well liked employee at VIA Rail. He never hesitated a second to bail me out over a forgotten airline ticket and performed magic so I wouldn’t miss my flight! Most of all I remember what a dear friend he was to Lynn and all the support he gave her while she struggled with her debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. Thinking of you all. He was such a special man with an amazing laugh. I have so many special memories of him at Golden Gate Bay. He was part of our family as we were yours. I remember playing the game "simon" with him and being amazed how he always beat me! I hope he is with my mom and dad; playing a game of way crib and enjoying a stoogie. - Posted by: Donna Moore (Norquay) (Family friend) on: Apr 18, 2023

Sharon, Michael and Michelle, I was a neighbour from Olive Street. I used to babysit occasionally for you. I remember when Marnie had her accident. I was devastated for you. My mom, Margaret knew Ted, possibly from bank of Montreal. I too was amazed his workplace could Accommodate him when he lost his sight. I’m so sorry for your loss. Always remembered. - Posted by: Patti ( calderwood) larson (Neighbor from olive street ) on: Jan 26, 2023

I worked with Ted for years. It was a pleasure knowing him. He amazed me every day by how he knew who you were when you came into a room before you even said anything. He was such a gracious person even when I would accidentally walk him into a pole on our lunch time walks. You tended to forget he couldn’t see. Ted was an amazing and wonderful person. He will be missed, but never forgotten. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Donna Cameron (VIA employee) on: Jan 13, 2023

Sharon, I was just thinking about Ted the other day, and wondering how he was. I missed his obituary as my husband Rod had passed away November 29th. Ted and I had so many connections over the years, with his mother and my dad having grown up together & them swimming in the Seine River. Then my Dad worked for Bockstael Construction; me going to school with Ted’s nephew Ronald Cassels; and finally our working together at VIA Rail. I wrote a poem about our “Connections” & read it at his retirement. I still remember when Ted totally lost his sight, and he called me, frantically saying “Call Sharon“. But he never gave up, learning Braille, and putting anyone, who needed it, in their place. He continued onward with his humour & uncanny ability to know who was walking off the elevator at the Wawanesa Building or into the office when we moved into the train station. The last time I saw you both was when you walked into my office at Ixtapa travel to see if I was working that day. Ted was an exceptional man (I remember when he cut open his foot chopping wood). I am so very sorry for your loss. You and your family have my heartfelt condolences. - Posted by: Christine Hallem Ward (Friend & Co-Worker) on: Jan 13, 2023

Sharon, not sure you will remember me but I was lucky enough to be nursing at WGH in the 70s when Ted was a patient on H6. There are some people who stand out in one’s lifetime and you and Ted have for me. Many times over the years I have thought of how courageous and stoic Ted was given the challenges he was facing. He was one of those people I looked forward to being assigned to care for. Always enjoyed his joking and making my shift a fun time. I am so sorry to read of Ted passing. - Posted by: Bev Mitchelson (Friend ) on: Jan 11, 2023

Sincere condolences to Ted's family for your great loss. I worked with him for 8 1/2 years in the 80's. On my second day at work, Ted already recognized my footsteps, and greeted me by name when I got off the elevator. He was always helpful and full of good cheer. I will remember him always, with great fondness. - Posted by: Jane Dick (ex-colleague) on: Dec 27, 2022

Ted and Sharon have been our neighbours at Nutimik Lake for more than 30 years. Throughout the years we have often been amazed at Ted’s determination to tackle jobs, not letting his disability slow him down. He would be out first thing in the morning walking through the yard checking to see if the flowers needed watering or the grass needed cutting. We will miss Ted greatly and will fondly remember all the good times we’ve had. - Posted by: Willie and Wendy Friesen (Friend) on: Dec 26, 2022

Right up until Ted passed away you would never have known he was sick. Came out and played Crib and Wizard at the Anavets club.
