DR. LUDGER KLEWES
February 4, 1959 - November 23, 2022

Sadly, Ludger died on November 23, 2022, unexpectedly, at St. Boniface Hospital, just days after returning home from a very enjoyable visit to Egypt and Jordan with his partner, Diane.
Ludger was born and raised in Germany, and enjoyed competing in, and teaching, track and field. He earned his doctorate in Biology. After teaching University medical students, he moved to Winnipeg in 1994.
He first worked at the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology. In 1999, he joined Dr. Geoff Hick's laboratory. In 2009, he joined Dr. Sabine Mai's group, where he worked until his retirement in 2019.
Since 2014, he had worked as the Manager of the Genomic Centre for Cancer Research and Diagnosis. He assisted numerous researchers in their imaging-related studies, helped to train students and coordinated workshops.
After retiring in 2019, he joined the Volunteer Services at CancerCare Manitoba, helping the patients navigate between appointments.
Ludger will always be missed and remembered by his loving partner of 28 years, Diane Henkel, also by special family members, Les and Matthew Isaacs, and many more close family and friends.
In Germany, he will be mourned by his sister, Sybille, brother-in-law Ullrick, three special aunts, Agnes, Gisela and Hildegund, and lifetime friends, Wolfgang and Barbara.
Ludger and Diane enjoyed travelling, went on many wonderful trips together, and both loved theatre and art galleries. They enthusiastically walked, jogged and hiked through parks and beaches, enjoying the outdoors and wildlife. Ludger will be missed by numerous friends who shared his passion for theatre and many other activities.
He will be in our hearts and memories always for his easygoing, fun loving nature and wacky sense of humour.
As per Ludger's wishes, there will be no formal service. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, since Ludger loved animals and nature, donations could be made to Assiniboine Park Zoo, no-kill animal shelters, the Humane Society or Oak Hammock Marsh.
