ELIZABETH (BETTY) ROSE HADDAD

After a long struggle with Alzheimer's, Betty passed away in her sleep at the age of 88 on December 24, 2022.
Betty was born in Winnipeg on October 7, 1934 to Hazel and Stuart Fisher. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Patricia.
She has been reunited with her beloved husband, Ray, who predeceased her in 2013.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Elizabeth (Denis), Diana (Stephen), Sandy (Michael) and Joyce (Steve); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister Kathryn (aka Jean); and brother Edward (Lyse).
Betty grew up in Winnipeg's North End and worked for a few years at The Bay downtown. Betty and Ray married in 1955 and eventually set up house in the West End with four girls and many dogs and cats. Over the years, Betty babysat many children in the big blue and white house on McGee St. They all knew her as Auntie Betty. She always had cookies or cakes on hand to serve – and if you were lucky – fresh bread on the counter. Betty was also a talented knitter and produced many quilts, sweaters, and slippers for the family over the decades.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Lions Manor (supported and personal care housing) who made Betty's last years as comfortable and kind as possible, especially Jem, Julie, Nancy, and Veron.
A spring memorial is planned.
Should you wish, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

  • I am so sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you all. I was just talking about your mom over Christmas with my friends because thanks to her I am now using Noxima cream, she had the most beautiful wrinkle free face. I have have known Betty since I was a child and found her to be one of the strongest women I know and had a huge heart. Love Fran - Posted by: Frances Newton (sister in law) on: Dec 31, 2022

  • We had met Betty and her family when we moved in across the street. We were neighbours for a few years before we moved. She was always so cheerful bringing light to the community! Always outside in the yard or talking to neighbours along with her husband! The two are often talked about even though we have been gone from the area for 13 years now. We all need neighbours like them. I hope your now peacefully enjoying the sunshine somewhere with your love again. - Posted by: Rhonda and Jon Funk (Old neighbour) on: Dec 30, 2022

  • I met Betty and Sugar Ray through my relationship with Sandy and Michael. Betty made me, a lost young adult, feel welcome in her home. Betty made the best brownies and cakes. Later I came back to visit with a special stop at Betty's house. Sugar Ray had passed, but Betty, being the strong woman that she was, was smiling and stoic. We spent a few minutes alone talking about my diagnosis of cancer. Betty looked at me and with such calm, quiet conviction said, "You will fight because there is no other way. Do not give yourself over to sadness or hopelessness. It is a waster of your time". She said what I need to hear at exactly the right moment. Walk again with your love, intertwine your fingers letting your love for one another lead the way to your next story. You will be missed, but forever remembered for the woman you were and the legacy you built through your children and through theirs. - Posted by: Kellly Geltmeier (Good friend of Sandy and Michael, and Joyce) on: Dec 30, 2022
