DAVID ALLAN THOMPSON
October 4, 1946 - January 10, 2023
Peacefully on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Dave passed away at home, with his family at his bedside.
Dave was born on October 4, 1946 in Winnipeg to Forbes and Phyllis Thompson and grew up in the West End with his brother Brian. He attended Wellington, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre schools.
Dave loved cars and bought his first car at age 14. He loved working on his many vehicles in his quest to achieve the fastest and best modified vehicle with the latest new motor parts from Softy's Speed Shop. His love for speed and nice cars continued throughout his life and when he retired he was finally able to get his 1972 Vega.
Dave loved music and learned to play the organ as a young boy. His passion for music lead him to a long career in the music industry working for Yamaha Music Centre, owning his own music store in Brandon and working in the music industry in Ontario.
In 1966 Dave met Marlene Sterner and they became soul mates. In 1970 they were married in Winnipeg and began their life's journey. In 1973 they moved to Brandon to open Thompson's Yamaha Music Centre and welcomed their son, Kevin David in 1975. Their daughter, Shelley Lynn was born in 1978 and completed their family.
After retiring from Yamaha Music Centre in 2013, Dave and Marlene moved to Brantford, Ontario to be near Kevin and Shelley and their families. Dave loved having Sunday family dinners and sharing family memories.
Dave is survived by his wife Marlene, his son Kevin (Ally), his daughter Shelley Blasdell (Ian), grandsons, Matthew and Cameron Thompson and their mother Jolene, granddaughters, Ashley and Isabella Blasdell as well as step-grandsons, Charlie and Connor Duncan. Dave is survived by his sister-in-law Florence in Edmonton, AB, his brother-in-law Bob Sterner (Janice) and their families. Dave was predeceased by his parents, Forbes and Phyllis and brother Brian as well as his mother-in-law Elsie Sterner and grandson Andrew Blasdell.
As per Dave's wishes there will be no service. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Dave got me on to pianos and we opened a store in Burlington ON and it became really successful. He left for Winnipeg and we never met again but he introduced me to pianos. Long live his memory. God bless him. - Posted by: Willem van Suijdam (Employer) on: Aug 15, 2024

I owe so much to Dave, as he gave me my first shot in the piano business while I was working at St John’s Music. I’ll always remember his terrific sense of humour, his great stories and his big heart. A truly great guy. I’ll miss you buddy! My condolences to Marlene and the whole Thompson family. - Posted by: Joe Cote (Co-worker) on: Feb 01, 2023

On behalf of everyone at Yamaha Canada and Yamaha Pianos, we are sorry to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was a true professional and took care of his customers extremely well. A real gentleman. He was always great to work with and we wish his family peace at this difficult time. - Posted by: Steve Butterworth (Business ) on: Jan 18, 2023

Words can't describe how heartbreaking it is to hear of Dave's passing. I look back at my time working with Dave at St. John's Music fondly. Going out to lunch with him and spending time upstairs in the piano department was the best part of my day. I can't look or listen to ABBA without thinking of him. My thoughts and prayers are with Marlene and the rest of his family. He will be missed. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Sandy Oliveira-Kroeker (co-worker/friend) on: Jan 16, 2023
