OSCAR CANTIN
May 27, 1922 - February 17, 2023
It is with deep sadness, we announce the passing of Oscar Cantin on February 17, 2023 at the age of 100 years of age.
Predeceased by his wife Faiga, his parents Mary and Joseph Cantin and brother Louis. He is survived by his daughters Sherry (John) Requeima, Alison Silcoff, brother Harvey (Yvonne) Cantin and grandchildren Jordan, Lauren, Lana, Aaron and Brandon.
Born in Winnipeg on May 27, 1922. He moved to Selkirk, Manitoba at eight years of age where he eventually owned and operated a successful restaurant/hot dog stand named "Oscar's". He sold his business and moved back to Winnipeg shortly after getting married in 1961. From that point on he worked at his brother's pharmacy, Cantin Drugs until his retirement.
Oscar served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942-1945, on the Lancaster II as a rear gunner.
Oscar had a love of life. He was an extrovert and loved socializing. He had a great sense of humour, loved music and dancing. His passion was photography. He documented life events through photographs, movies, slides and videos. He captured many memories of his family and friends and shared them with them over the years.
His positive attitude and his ability to adapt to life challenges served him well. When he totally lost his sight in 2016 and had to move into a personal care home.
We would like to thank the staff at the Simkin Centre, St. Boniface Hospital, Dr. Chung and Dr. Jattan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Oscar's memory to a charity of your choice.

Our family lived on Elmhurst Road in Charleswood (in the "village"). I remember Oscar at Cantin Drug store. Went shopping there with my mom and dad and sisters. It was a big part of our lives at that time. Great memories...seems a lifetime ago. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Barbara Tanner (Grew up in Charleswood and remember the store ) on: Mar 19, 2023

Sherry and Alison, I’m so sorry to hear of your father’s passing. My parents were Helen and Edward in Selkirk. Your father’s restaurant was in their building. My mom and your dad grew up together. She often said your dad was like the brother she didn’t have. If I close my eyes i can see your parents at our kitchen table talking, laughing and sharing stories with my parents and many of their friends. Both your parents were such wonderful people. Your dad always made me laugh and your mom always brought me the most delicious home made egg rolls as a treat (they were SO good). I remember how proud your father was of both of you at your bat mitzvahs which I was very excited to attend. They always spoke about both of you with so much love. The last time I saw your dad I was home for Christmas, your mom had already passed away. Many of their old Selkirk friends were together that night talking about the old days till late in the evening. My parents cared very much for your mom and dad. Im so sorry to hear he is gone. He will be fondly remembered by many people including me and my sister. - Posted by: Cliff Ledwos (Family friend) on: Feb 25, 2023

I am sad to hear of Oscar’s passing. He was such a lovely man. My mother, Helen Ledwos, was a good and long-time friend of Oscar’s. I looked online to try to contact him in December 2016 when mom died, aged 93 but wasn’t able to locate him. I have many happy memories of visits and dinners with Oscar over the years (and with his wife, prior to her death). Sending love to the family. From Karina Ledwos, my brother Cliff Ledwos (daughter and son of Helen and Ed Ledwos deceased). - Posted by: Karina Ledwos (Family friend) on: Feb 25, 2023

Oscar was a long time friend of our family and especially my parents. He visited our cottage many times in his travels over the years and provided his running commentaries which were always humorous with questions and comments about life. He enjoyed life’s offerings to the fullest and shared many wonderful stories whenever we had the pleasure of seeing him. Gregarious and kind and never forgotten! - Posted by: Karen skinnet (Long time friend of our family) on: Feb 25, 2023
