TED WAINIKKA
Ted Walter Wainikka was born in Port Arthur, Ontario in March of 1934. He received his high school education in Port Arthur, Ontario and later attended Lakehead University and Queen's University. Dad loved his family, the outdoors, the movies and excelled at hockey, golf, and baseball.
Dad married Donna, the love of his life, in 1957, and they enjoyed 65 years together as dance partners. And they danced a lot. They were blessed with four children – Brad (Myrna), Tracey (Jeff), Lesley (Marc) and Grant (Trish), twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Mary Wainikka and his sister Dixie Winters. He is survived by his brother David (Barbara) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad loved us all dearly and we enjoyed playing cards, Trivial Pursuit, fishing and attending numerous sporting events with him. Dad patiently witnessed an unending supply of fanned slappers, booted grounders, and errant golf shots from us. Eventually, he made us better.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were naturally a source of great pride and very special to him. His love and support for each of them was boundless. Regardless of the sport or activity, he was always on hand, giving encouragement and support. He also provided very useful "advice" to a number of officials and referees!
Always a superlative athlete, as a young man Dad played on a number of hockey teams across Canada and had a try-out with the Montreal Canadians in the early 1950's. In his later years, Dad played "oldtimers" for many teams including the EK Millionaires, Winnipeg Club Oldtimers and the Winnipeg Jets Alumni. One of his fondest hockey memories was the opportunity to travel with the Club Oldtimers to the then Soviet Union. He loved his teammates and "lineys" and enjoyed the occasional post-game sociable. Dad threw a mean curve-ball, and shot his age in golf each year in his 70's. Many of these rounds were played at the Wildewood Club, a place he treasured throughout his life.
Dad worked in the insurance industry for over 40 years in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg. He started and owned his own brokerage of which he was justly proud. Dad served on a number of Boards over the years and supported countless community based organizations and coached many local sports teams. Through all of these ventures, it was the fellowship and friendships made that Dad cherished most of all.
His was a life well lived.
The family would like to thank Mira and the staff at the Golden Door for providing care and comfort to Dad in his latter years. He was fond of each of you and said so regularly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Fort Garry United Church at 2:00 p.m. on September 12, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ab McDonald Foundation or Parkinson Canada.

Ted was an excellent golfer and hockey player with whom I had the pleasure of sharing both sports on many occasions. One memory of note was a hockey tournament in Victoria when we were both inducted into the Playmakers 80 and Over Club as Hockey Knights Exemplar in Canada. We also enjoyed many social occasions, visits and special Christmas parties at the Wainikka residence. Wonderful memories, great friends. Our deepest condolences to Donna and family at the passing of this fine gentleman. With love and caring: Fred & Laura - Posted by: Fred Ross (Friends) on: Sep 10, 2023

Ted was a friend to our family for many years. He started helping my father with the company business, and then when it came time for me to take over the family business, Ted was there to help me along. He was an advisor to me, and he became a very good friend. Ted will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Jack Wiebe (Friend) on: Sep 08, 2023

Played hockey and had a few beers with Teddy over the years I always remember the night Teddy, Dave Veitch and I went to a ball game in Daytona after playing a game with the Winnipeg Olden Boys . It seemed we were trying to outdo each other in discussing the nuances of the game . After the game, one of the guys sitting in front of us told me how much he enjoyed listening to our banter . Loved BS'ing with Ted, and hope to re-visit that experience when we meet again .Sincere condolences to Donna and family . Jock Rodgers . Last of the stand-up Goalies who now requires 2 guys to help him get up if he goes down . - Posted by: Jock Rodgers (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2023

My friendship with Ted took 10 seconds to begin. It was my time out with the Winnipeg Clubs and they told me I'd be playing with Ted Wainikka. Our first time on the ice, it was "tic-tac-toe" and in 10 seconds we scored our first goal as "lineys". On the bench Ted said to me "Nice play ouy there" to which I replied "Thank you, Mr. Wainikka". Ted said "It's Ted", to which I said "I know, but my Dad taught me to always respect my elders". Ted laughed and thus began our long relationship as friends and "lineys". Ted was smart and easy to play with making him a great "liney". Hockey players will understand how important that is to make the game fun and we had lots of that. Thanks Ted - Posted by: Ken Sutyla (friend and "liney") on: Sep 07, 2023

My condolences to Donna and family on Ted's passing. He and Donna are two of the best people I have ever known. I had the privilege of working with them and becoming friends over the years. Ted was one of the best athletes I've ever met. We had many games of golf together including several trips to Orlando for a week of golfing. I witnessed many amazing shots by my friend. More than just a great athlete, he was a better husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed! - Posted by: Terry Bialek (Friend) on: Sep 02, 2023
