GERTRUDE (TRUDY) UNGER
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Gertrude (Trudy) Unger, who went quietly and peacefully on September 26 at Concordia Place. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing.
Trudy was pre-deceased by her parents, Joseph and Florence Downs, her two brothers, Norman and Joe, and her loving husband, Albert, who passed away in 1995.
Trudy is survived by her children; Maureen (John) Scott, Gordon (Pat) Unger, Wayne (Shelaigh) Unger, Rick Unger, Edward (Brenda) Unger, and Carrie (Les) Nemeth, as well as numerous grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by nephew Norman and niece Vivian and family in England, brother-in-law Ed (Juline) Unger in Creston, BC. and mom’s best friend of 50 years, Irene Toews, of Calgary, AB.
Trudy was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England and came to Canada as a war-bride in 1947. Trudy, Albert, and their young family lived in Gladstone, Portage la Prairie, and finally settled in Transcona in Winnipeg.
Mom was a manager of various restaurants and retail operations throughout her working career. Her last job before retirement was as manager of the gift shop in the Fort Garry Hotel. She enjoyed being a manager and was always ‘dressed to the nines’ each and every day. She was an avid shopper (especially clothing and jewelry), and enjoyed entertaining her friends and neighbors.
Mom and Dad travelled back to the UK numerous times to visit her parents and relatives. Post-retirement, they spent their winters in McAllen, Texas, returning home to Manitoba for the summer months to enjoy their family and friends, camping, hunting, and fishing.
The family gratefully thanks the management and staff at Concordia Place for the excellent care and kindness they extended to Trudy during her residency.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway 1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg.
