Shirley was born to Lydia (Deere) and Gustav Schroeder in Winkler and lived in the 1-6 District until she moved to Winnipeg when she was 16. She took a secretarial course and began a long career in the field until her retirement from North American Lumber. She was known as the go to “Fix-it” person – “Surely Shirley will make it work or get it done”. She was very involved with the Lutheran Church and loved singing in the choir. Her passion was classical music, the Symphony and Opera. She was a member of the Symphony and attended many shows over the years. Another was baseball, listening to the Blue Jays on the radio and attending the Gold Eyes games with her friend Vicky. Knowing all the stats, who and where they were playing. She loved walking through the Assiniboine Park and taking pictures. Reading and especially the National Geographic which would take her all around the world. Shirley loved to talk, it didn’t matter to who, always had a ready smile and a positive attitude. She was grateful for everything and one in her life, so it was fitting that she ended her journey on Thanksgiving.
She will be joining her parents and siblings, Ileen (Norman) Krueger and Elmer Schroeder, leaving to mourn Karen Krueger (Len Slack) niece, Kevin Krueger (Lisa) nephew, Marion Schroeder sister-in-law, Lynsay Olafson (Dave), Brett Krueger (Rachel Howatt), great-nieces, Jaycee, Ava, Danika and Natalie, cousins and friends. She stayed true to her beliefs, herself and those she loved.
A private family graveside service will be held at Chapel Cemetery, Morden. We can’t thank the staff at the Tabor Home enough for the caring and compassion shown to Shirley and us over these last six years and especially as she prepared to leave this world. It didn’t go unnoticed. As Shirley would say, “Among the things you can give and still keep are your word, a smile and a grateful heart. Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

My condolences to the family of Shirley. I have known Shirley since I was born. My family (Schlosser) attended first English Lutheran with Shirley. From a little girl I sang in the choir with Shirley till adulthood when I moved away. She was a kind, fun lady who always showed respect, enthusiasm, joy and love of the lord.
