Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID JOHN CAMPBELL
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David John Campbell on October 14, 2023, in Winnipeg.
Born on June 14, 1942, near Preeceville, SK, to Jack and Gladys Campbell, David was raised in the Alpine, MB area. While David attended the University of Manitoba to earn his teaching certificate, he met Rosemarie Harms, a first-year teacher; they began their partnership and were married on December 28, 1968. While in Elie, David and Rosemarie welcomed their daughter Sharon to their family, followed by the birth of their daughter, Heather, two years later. They then lived in St. Francois Xavier, where David was the principal of the local school. In 1980, after a year of travel, the family settled in Altona. David and Rosemarie taught in the Altona area for the remainder of their teaching careers with David serving as the guidance counselor and then the Vice Principal at the high school. In their retirement, David and Rosemarie first lived near Arnes and then settled in Winnipeg.
David was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, and lived with cancer for more than 20 years, many of those years of active treatment. Soon after his diagnosis, he was delighted by the arrival of his granddaughter, Ava, followed by the arrival of Lia two years later. David was motivated to live well and share many experiences with his family - his life was filled with friendship, travel, making art, building homes, and using his knowledge and skills to support others in any way that he could. He was a person of faith and was an active member of Altona Mennonite Church and Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship. David lived with purpose and focused determination until his last day, and his kind and gentle nature endured.
David was husband to Rosemarie, father to Sharon Campbell and Benita Truderung, father to Heather and Phil Campbell-Enns, and Papa to his granddaughters, Ava and Lia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law (Evelyn Campbell), his Harms siblings (Margaret and Francis Giesbrecht, John and Heidi Harms, Dianne Harms and Tim Brandt, Wilf and Karen Harms, and Ray Harms), and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his beloved siblings (Bill Campbell, Leita and Leo Racette, and Dorothy Campbell and Mike Bielik), and his parents-in-law (Lily and John Harms).
A memorial service will take place on October 21, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship, 150 Bayridge Ave., Winnipeg.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Robyn Olson, Dr. Joel Gingerich, Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk, and staff at CancerCare Manitoba for the many years of compassionate care. They also wish to thank Friends Funeral Service and Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship for their support.
