GLORIA JEAN D'ARGIS

December 13, 1944 - November 12, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother and grandmother on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the age of 78, with her children and grandchildren by her side.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Marvel D'Argis. Survived by husband Marcel Boissonneault and brother Larry (Rose Marie) D'Argis.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: son Douglas (Leslie) Hodgins, daughter Cheryl (Kevin) Bate and son Craig (Kate) Hodgins. Forever remembered by her ten grandchildren: Matthew, Jeffrey and Meghan Hodgins; Natasha, Noelle and Nevaya Bate; Rayanna, Ashton, McKinley and Lochlin Hodgins. Sadly missed by several special cousins and friends.

Mom was born in Winnipeg at Victoria Hospital and spent part of her childhood in Fort Rouge before moving to St. James when she was 11. Mom remained in St. James her whole life. She took great pride in her home on Queen Street where she raised her family and lived for 54 years. Her house was immaculate and her yard was always filled with flowers and the sounds of her grandchildren playing and swimming.

Mom worked hard raising three children while working full time and continuing her post-secondary education. She earned her Business Administration Certificate in Management and Marketing from Red River College and participated in countless seminars and workshops thereafter. Through all those years she was also a hockey mom, a soccer mom, a dance mom (sewing many costumes) and a volunteer at the school and community club. She helped with homework and essays and as we got older resumes and home projects.

Mom loved to read and devoured hundreds of books. She was active throughout her life and open to trying her hand at new things. From cheerleading and baton in high school to tennis, yoga, running, aerobics, baseball, curling and cross country skiing. She loved music across many genres and she loved to dance! She was a great dancer and always one of the first to be up on the dance floor at any event!

After retiring Mom was able to enjoy reading, gardening, nature, music and her grandchildren. She attended their Christmas and band concerts, dance recitals, plays, swimming, soccer, hockey games and graduations. She hosted many memorable family dinners, birthdays and summer gatherings by the pool.

Mom was truly a force. Small in size yet mighty. Smart and articulate. Strong and a bit stubborn. Serious yet humorous. Soft and giving of love. Always there when we needed her.

In 2018 Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and Vascular Dementia. She walked a long and difficult road with such strength and courage. Although Mom lost most of her life's memories she always recognized her children and grandchildren. And even when she lost her words she held on to us through holding hands and music. She never lost her fighting spirit. She remained mighty.

We would like to thank the nurses, health care aides and all staff at Riverview for the exceptional care provided to Mom and for the support our family received during those difficult hours.

In keeping with Mom's wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering to celebrate her life will take place at a future date.

If so desired, donations can be made in her memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Through every turn I'll be near you

I'll come anytime you call

I'll catch you when you fall

I'll be guiding you

You're free to dance again Mom

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Gloria will always be remembered for her sweet smile and her little chuckle when I told her a bad joke. Her love for her children and grandchildren was clearly evident when her face lit up every time they visited. The love that her family and Gloria had for each other was palpable. It was truly an honour and a privilege to have cared for Gloria. Doug and Cheryl, thank you for sharing so many great memories of your mom during her last days. It was an honour and a privilege to care for Gloria. - Posted by: Tammy (Nurse) on: Dec 01, 2023

  • Grandma was a strong and loving person. She created so many fun experiences and memories for her family. I will never forget spending summer days at the pool. Her house was a hub for family gatherings, Christmas dinners, and birthdays for all my cousins. She will be sorely missed by all her grandkids. • Grandma - you were always so incredibly supportive of me and my siblings. We were very blessed to have you through the stages of our lives. You were a wonderfully caring and loving person, and you were always a voice of guidance and encouragement. It will be hard to picture future days without you in it. But when I look back into days gone by, they’re filled with memories of love and fondness for my favourite grandma in the whole world. Love you, Grandma - Posted by: Jeffrey Hodgins (Grandson) on: Nov 29, 2023

  • Grandma, I will continue to dance in your honour knowing that you’re dancing beside me. May you dance with us forever. I love you always. Thank you for everything you did. - Posted by: Meghan (Granddaughter ) on: Nov 29, 2023

  • Gloria was the eldest cousin of the Chester family. My father, Alfred and her mother, Marvel were siblings. We were 18 years apart so it wasn’t until I become an adult that we became close. My husband, Len and I and Gloria and her husband, Marcel would get together for lunches, and suppers; sometimes with other cousins as well. She was very special to me and I will miss everything about her. She was an extraordinary person. To her children and grandchildren, we are so very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Kelleen Wiens (First cousin) on: Nov 25, 2023

  • My grandparents were neighbours to the D'Argis family on Ferry Road which is where I met Gloria and her brother Larry. Sending deepest condolences to the family. Very sorry to hear of her passing. - Posted by: Louise Bloomfield (Friend) on: Nov 25, 2023
