Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM HUGHES
Bill (William James) Hughes passed away December 3, 2023, at the St. Boniface Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Brenda; his daughters, Janice (Ted) Edmonds, and Lisa (Jeff) Bartlette; grandchildren, Sam Edmonds and Grace Edmonds; brother Terry Hughes; and nieces, Kim and Susan.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Nan Hughes; his in-laws, Kay and Bill Banks; and sister-in-law Carol Hughes.
Born October 28, 1940, Bill grew up in Norwood. He played hockey, baseball, tennis, squash, curling and golf over his lifetime. He was the past president of the Heather Curling Club, as were his father and brother. But hockey was his real passion! He enjoyed playing it, coaching it, and would often be found cheering on his Winnipeg Jets. He had fond memories and loved to talk about when his Juvenile team won the city championship. He turned down a hockey scholarship to UND because he wanted to stay in Winnipeg.
Bill joined the family business, Hughes Agencies, in 1963, the same year he and Brenda were married. He enjoyed the insurance business and the people he met and dealt with on a daily basis.
He loved the family cottage at Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park. Any time spent in that beautiful part of the country was heaven to him. The whole family has lake friends and city friends. Retirement 30 years ago meant more cottage time. Winter getaways to Florida and Mexico were discontinued with the rise of Covid, but lake time carried on.
Bill loved his family, a good “discussion”, going for coffee with friends, meeting the guys on Saturday afternoon, the Jets, the Bombers, and of course, the cottage.
If friends wish, they can remember Bill with a donation to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
A special thank you to the caring, hard-working staff at St. Boniface Hospital. Your work and dedication is very much appreciated.
A time to gather and remember Bill will take place on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., at E.J. Coutu Funeral Home, located at 680 Archibald Street, Winnipeg Manitoba.

Dear Brenda and Family, We are saddened to read of Bill's passing. We tried to get together on rare trips home to Wpg. from Windsor, Ontario. Visits with Bill and Terry were fun catching up on the old neighborhood and friends. Always a great laugh - he will be missed by many - old friends especially. Sincerely Bill and Barbara Thompson - Posted by: Bill Thompson (Friend From Norwood) on: Dec 13, 2023

Bill was a very special person, when I was a young man that could no longer play Junior curling, I was welcomed onto a team with Bill Hughes, Roy Arndt and Bill Biehl. I learned so much from these three that I ended up as a President of the Heather curling club as well. Bill Hughes was a mentor for me. Life advice and world advice was much appreciated by Bill. It was a great time in my life. Brenda, My sincere condolences to you and the family, the memory of Bill will live with me forever. - Posted by: Kenneth Rowson (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2023

In 1975 my ex-wife Janie and I bought our first home, 2 doors down from Bill and Brenda on Pine Bluff Rd. We quickly got to know Bill and Brenda, borrowed yard tools until we could afford our own, and hired the girls as baby sitters. Many warm memories of those days many years ago including a weekend in Clear Lake at the beloved cottage. My sincere condolences to Brenda and family - Posted by: Bob Stewart (Neighbour) on: Dec 09, 2023
