DR. FARID-UDDIN KHALED SHARIFF

July 2, 1935 - November 27, 2023

With our hearts breaking we announce the death of Farid during the early morning hours on Monday, November 27, 2023.

Windsurfer, Fisherman, Sailor, Carpenter, Physician and Surgeon; Farid was the son of the late Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Shariff and Jahanara Begum. However, Farid was first and foremost a loving husband to Rosemary, a loving father to his children, Iftekhar, Khaled, Mary, Tahara, and Shane; grandfather to Dakota, Roan, Gabriel and George Antony. Left also to mourn his death is Khawaja Zubair his much-loved nephew, Khawaja’s wife Patty and children, Khaled and Sarah-Jean.

Farid was devoted to his family in Canada and travelled repeatedly to oversee his many medical and educational projects in Bangladesh. He was more than satisfied with the successful completion of the Moulana Ashraf Chowdhury High School in his home village of Pirkhain. Not always patient, but a man with a generous heart, demonstrating with conviction that he truly was his brother’s keeper.

Farid embarked upon his medical career when, following his graduation from Dacca Medical College he travelled to Regina, Saskatchewan and completed his Internship year in Regina General Hospital. A challenging and exciting year of practice followed with the Grey Nuns in Ile-a-la-Crosse before Farid travelled for further study to Edinburgh, Scotland. While studying in Scotland, Farid met and married Rosemary and with great enthusiasm returned to be the sole medical practitioner in Dawson City, Yukon in February of 1964. Eighteen months later Winnipeg became home where Farid completed the lengthy and intensive training to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

During Farid’s 42 years of Orthopedic Practice, always and without exception his priority was the safety and well being of all the patients he was privileged to serve.

There is much more one could say about his honesty and integrity as a man and as a surgeon, but we knew him as our rock. He always spoke his mind and more than anything he loved his time building our cabin in Lake of the Woods; there, he shared the joy and the laughter with family and friends.

We miss you so much. Rest now my beloved husband; travel on now with the angels loving father and grandfather.

Interment following Janaza Prayer took place on November, 28, 2023.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Rosemary and Children: Anne first met Farid when she was a new grad (RN) and he was a resident - and a very fine and caring doctor indeed! The work relationship developed into a friendship between the four of us, and included the little Shariffs. We remember fondly our frequent get togethers before our leaving Manitoba, and also on our infrequent return visits, catching up - reminiscing, sharing curry and even a couple of trips to the beloved cottage. Our deepest condolences on your loss! Love, Anne & Al. - Posted by: Anne & Al Malinauskas (Friends) on: Dec 22, 2023

  • I had the pleasure of working with Dr Shariff many years ago out of the Misericordia Hospital ! He was a mentor to a very green young nurse starting out on her career path! He even had a group of us out to the cabin for some sailing…. Boy did we have fun! My sincere condolences to your family 🙏 - Posted by: Lorina Panchuk (Coworker ) on: Dec 09, 2023

  • He will be missed, he was a very well respected Surgeon. I had a friend in my younger years that spent over a year off work in bed with a back problem. Dr Shariff changed all that for her. Sending my condolences to his family. - Posted by: Roxanne Hudson (medical assistant) on: Dec 09, 2023
