ABE PLETT

April 23, 1933 - December 7, 2023

Abe Plett, age 90, of Steinbach passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria (Loewen); three daughters, Helen and Ron Falk, Lydia Hildebrand, Rose and James Froese, nine grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son-in-law Ron Hildebrand, six great-grandchildren, and three brothers.

Abe was born April 23, 1933 in Neu-Schoensee, Ukraine. He was the oldest of 7 children. During WWII, the family fled Russia to Poland, Germany eventually settling in Colony Neuland, Paraguay for 9 years. In 1956 Abe’s family immigrated to Steinbach, Manitoba. Abe married the love of his life, Maria Loewen on May 19, 1957. Working as a meat cutter was Dad’s life-long dream. In 1964, he started his career at Penner Tomboy (later Penner Foods) as an assistant meat manager. In 1978 as Penner Foods expanded, Abe was promoted to the position of meat buyer and supervisor for the meat departments of the four Penner Foods stores. Dad loved working in the meat department and loved interacting with both co-workers and customers.

Abe made a decision to follow the Lord when he was 16 years old and attended Bible School while in Paraguay. Abe and Maria were active members of the Steinbach MB Church and served together as deacons for many years. Abe also taught Sunday School and preached in the German service. While in retirement, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, going for breakfast and hosting extended family events. Abe celebrated his 90th birthday in April and felt blessed that God had sustained him all these years. His smile and outgoing personality will be missed by all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with public viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
