EVELYN ANNETTE WENER

(nee BRICKER)

Evelyn was born April 11, 1928 and passed away peacefully on December 7, 2023. Our parents had a strong and loving marriage for 56 years and together raised four children.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Jim and Mickey Wener, Lynne Oreck-Wener, Ralf and Hanna Wener, and Pam Wener and Gary Altman. She adored her grandchildren: Nofar, Adi, Sarah and Aaron, Taryn and Tim, Corey, Eleni, Daniel, Ira and Leah, and Hart and Jocelyn. Her biggest smiles were for her great-grandchildren: Yahli, Shira, Tilly, Yonatan, Lucas, Boady, Carter, Cooper, Zoe, and Rae. Evelyn is also survived by her sister Jacqueline Bricker.

Evelyn was predeceased by her loving husband, Albert, her son Bob Wener, her grandson Benji Itzkow, her parents Aaron and Rose Bricker, and her sister Peggy Guberman.

While living on Matheson Avenue, Evelyn attended Luxton School and then when the family moved to Elm Street, she attended Kelvin High School. She was exceptionally bright and was put ahead in school, finishing grade 11 at 15. At 15 ½ years old Evelyn left Winnipeg to attend the University of Minnesota where she earned a BSc in Medical Technology. She returned to Winnipeg and accepted a job at Deer Lodge Centre where she was the highest educated Phlebotomist. After WWII she lost her job because of being a woman.

Evelyn was humble; she brought great strength and wisdom to each of us. She prioritized her family and always brought us together for Friday night dinners, weekends at the cottage, holidays and birthdays. She made our home warm and welcoming to all. Our home was lively with four children all pursing different sports and social activities but come Friday evening, we were all home for dinner. Evelyn was a cook extraordinaire and we enjoyed amazing meals, laughs, debates and Dallas.

Evelyn has left her children and grandchildren with all the recipes needed for living a good life.
