CAROL RUTH BIGGAR

(nee GREEN)

1942 - 2023

On December 14, 2023, with her family by her side, aged 81.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband, Bob; her three sons and their families: Stephen, Carolyn, Scott and Kirsten; Kevin, Shelley, Braden and Emily; Paul and Monica; brother Dave Green (Swift Current, SK); cousin Jack Peterson and his family; Gordon (Ginette) and Glen Biggar; and friend Mary Brander. Carol was predeceased by her parents, George and Ruth (Hodgkinson) Green, nephew Lou Green, and cousin Heather (Green) Pacey.

Carol was born on April 15, 1942, in Winnipeg. In her youth, Carol enjoyed many sports, including softball, track and field, and bowling. Her childhood was surrounded by extended family and neighbours, memories of which she has shared with her family. In 1960, she married her lifelong partner, Robert Biggar, on August 13, 1960, at Deer Lodge United Church. Their three rambunctious boys soon followed, keeping Bob and Carol busy. The family moved with Bob's work, living in Lachine (Quebec), Pinawa, Winnipeg, and Ottawa. Her sons have happy memories of family holidays and road trips, as well as camping at Sportsman Park at Clear Lake and staying with Nana and Papa, Ruth and George Green, at Ditch Lake. Yorkshire puddings were a highlight of special family meals. Her hot buttered bread was a treat for both her kids and grandkids. Carol enjoyed music and the house was always alive with music from a record playing. She taught her sons how to hem pants, iron and cook. Once her boys were independent teens, Carol served as a role model for her children and grandchildren, returning to school and obtaining a university degree in Social Work. She was dedicated to the best for the families and youth she assisted while working at Winnipeg Child & Family Services. Carol and Bob made many warm family memories with winter holidays in Carlsbad, California, often with their sons and daughters-in-law. After retirement, she and Bob enjoyed many years together at their homes in Sandy Hook, Indio (California), and Winnipeg.

Carol was an advocate and lover of animals, rescuing and lovingly caring for many cats, dogs, and other animals. She volunteered at the Winnipeg Humane Society and in Indio, California. She was a keen gardener, with large and colourful gardens in bloom. There was always a puzzle on the go, on the dining room table, and a book nearby, from the library or the latest family book exchange. She enjoyed evenings of Bridge with family, or watching the Jets or Bombers with family. Carol enjoyed her trips with Bob, Kevin and Shelley which were always filled with great food, laughter and activities that she had never tried before. The annual New Year's Eve dinner was always a highlight in Indio where Carol and Shelley worked their magic in the kitchen. Carol was proud of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments and loved their visits, and hearing about their lives. Always interested in family and family history, Carol recently enjoyed connecting with Hodgkinson cousins, Elisabeth Schuett Hodgkinson (Bolivia) and her son Diego Martinez Schuett (England).

Special thanks to her many kind neighbours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of your choice. Tributes and messages of condolence for the family can be made online at passages.winnipegfreepress.com

  • I really liked Carol. I was always so happy when Bob and Carol returned from Indio, and felt genuinely sad when they left in the fall. It was fun talking about flowers and cats with Carol, and she was always so fond of my Wpg Humane Society fosters. She loved coming over for a visit with the new arrivals. My foster fail, Buddy, was her personal favourite. He is accutely shy of people, and would run and hide under the bed if anyone came in the house. Carol's kind and patient persistence paid off. She even sang to him. Buddy finally rewarded all that by not running away from her, and let her pet him. He even came over to her for a pat on the head. Carol was delighted. I have such warm and happy memories of enjoying a glass of wine with Carol and Bob on warm summer evenings. I liked Carol the moment I met her. There was just something so welcoming about her. I will really miss her. Don and I will plant Gazanias in her memory. She loved them and always planted them in her front garden. - Posted by: Jill Hart (friend) on: Jan 17, 2024
