Duncan was born on December 25th, 1932, to parents Lloyd and Jean Stewart of Goodlands. He was predeceased by his wife Marlene, his younger brother Hilton and his grandchildren Jessie Emmelene and Viola Jean Stewart.
Duncan is survived by his sister Helen(Gerry) Myers, sister-in-law Margaret Stewart and his seven children: Catherine (Ron) Anfinson, Evelyn (Bruce) Donogh, Airdrie (Ron) Knight, Blair (Sonia) Stewart, David (Donna) Stewart, Laura (Cameron) Turnbull, and Heather (Michael) Smart. He also had 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Duncan passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 13th 2024, surrounded by his family in the Deloraine Hospital.
Dad grew up on the home farm southeast of Goodlands. He farmed his entire life and loved the land and being outdoors. Until he was 83 he loved to hop on the tractor and help Dave do the baling on occasion. Dad had a great love of nature. His favourite place was up in the Turtle Mountains. He would go for walks on his own but also included us on many occasions. In later years he enjoyed taking the grandkids for a hike in the hills.
He served as a director on the Sierra Club and also as the president of the Western Canadian Sierra Club. He was a strong environmentalist.
Dad had a love of books, and this began as a young child and carried on throughout his entire life. In his library were books about nature, the environment, philosophy, world politics, sociology, poetry and any other topic except fiction. He never stopped learning. Whenever one would visit, you would find him sitting in the kitchen in his favourite chair doing a crossword puzzle with a podcast playing in the background and a few books within reach.
Growing up we had many memories of our father listening to music. He would sit for hours and listen to his collection of CDs and records. He loved all kinds of music with classical being his favourite. He instilled this love of music in all of us. Dad really enjoyed the many years he sang with the “Southwest Singers”. He loved the many performances they put on throughout the years. He could always be heard singing away to himself.
Dad loved all of these things but none of them measured up to his love of being surrounded by family. He looked so forward to a visit from any family member. In later years Dad is the one we turned to for guidance. He never judged us and would always give common sense solutions to any dilemmas. Dad was very community minded.
He served 12 years as the Reeve of the Brenda Municipality. He worked so hard to make his community a better place.
In 2017 Dad made the difficult decision to leave the farmhouse and move to the Centennial Apartments in Deloraine. Although it took him a while to settle in, he soon surrounded himself with his books, DVDs, CDs, and pictures and learned to love his “little nest”.
The family would like to give a huge thank you to Megan Vandenberghe and the home care program. Without this program Dad would not have been able to stay in his apartment for as long as he did. These home care workers soon became family and he loved their visits. He couldn’t say enough good things about each and every one of them.
We would also like to thank Dr. Thind, Dr. Sharma and the amazing nursing staff for the wonderful care he received while in hospital. The care and compassion he was shown was truly appreciated.
